Want to dress like a screen icon? You can start by putting on a pair of these Persol Steve McQueen 714SM sunglasses.
Yes, it really doesn’t get much more hip than this when the sun comes out. A pair of sunglasses worn by Steve McQueen both onscreen and offscreen. These were his ‘go to’ shades.
In fact, Persol was his ‘go to’ brand, with the movie icon building up a sizeable collection of its shades during his life, slipping them on when he was getting in the car or on the bike, as well as during some of his most memorable film scenes.
Remember him in The Thomas Crown Affair? He was wearing a pair of the 714 shades. Which is why the company has rebranded a special edition with his name.
This is still the much-loved folding design, which is ideal for popping into your pocket, with McQueen keen on the light havana frame and crystal blue lenses. But there are different versions available in this special edition range if you want to tweak the look.
Each pair is made in Italy and have acetate frames and crystal polar blue lenses with an anti-glare treatment. Even when they’re not being worn, the Steve McQueen 714SM sunglasses look the part in that rather lovely custom-made leather case, which is a nice bonus.
But you do pay for the McQueen treatment. In fact, you pay £312 if you want a pair from the Steve McQueen collection.
You can get those directly from the Persol website if you do want the real deal. But if you want the same Persol design without the Steve McQueen touches, they come in cheaper at £162 in various finishes. You can get those at the Sunglasses Shop and let’s be honest when you have them on, few people will know the difference.
