Yesterday we mentioned that Jasper Johns was one of the artists to feature at the forthcoming Pop Art Portraits exhibition at London’s National Portrait Gallery – and right on cue, Taschen has brought out a new book about the man – Jasper Johns by Barbara Hess.
It’s part of Taschen’s Basic Art series, so ideal if you want a basic introduction and a little bit more. Johns, one of America’s most important artists of the 20th century, is probably best known for his ‘flag’ paintings of the 1950s (the Museum of Modern Art in New York recently paid over $20 million for White Flag), along with other bold themes that use (amongst other things) targets, numbers, letters, and maps.
This book covers that and much more, with over 100 illustrations and a detailed chronological summary of the artist’s life and work. You can pick it up for £5.99.
