We actually missed the original Gertie's New Book for Better Sewing back in 2012, which was a guide to creating your very own mid-20th century clothing and the techniques required. Like the blog that inspired it, the book was a hit – so much so that a second volume is on the way. That is Gertie Sews Vintage Casual: A Modern Guide to Sportswear Styles of the 1940s and 1950s by Gretchen Hirsch.

The book is cut from the same cloth (sorry), moving on from the dresses, skirts and evening wear of the first book, focusing on the sportswear of the era – wide-legged trousers, beach rompers, 1950s-style shorts, casual dresses, fitted capri pants and casual jackets and coats for example.

This volume splits into two sections – Techniques and Projects – the former showing you how to master the skills needed to create the items and the latter helping you create the designs in question for your very own mid-20th century casual wardrobe.

The 224-page book is published on 1st October 2014, but you can pre-order now for the discounted price of £14.95.
