What do you get the pop art lover who has everything from Christmas? Perhaps this amazing Andy Warhol Campbell’s Soup Can Chess Set by Kidrobot.
At least, you do if you love someone enough to spend a hige chunk of cash on something that can’t quite make its mind up whether it is a game or a piece of art.
To be fair, that’s probably a selling point for this officially licensed chess set, which has been produced in conjunction with The Andy Warhol Foundation.
This chess set features Andy Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans as chess pieces, all of which sit on a ‘pop’ chess board. At first glance it looks like it would be impossible to play as a game of chess. In fact, it might be more suited to a game of draughts. But if you look closely, you will realise that each three-inch vinyl Campbell’s soup can is labelled with the name of the corresponding chess piece.
So you can play, but if might take a little more attention to pick out which piece is which.
Although saying that, I would imagine most people will have this as more of a display piece than a functioning chess set. It will look impressive in a living room and it is definitely a talking point.
Of course, as I hinted above, this chess set doesn’t come cheap. In fact, no officially licensed Warhol merchandise is ever found in a bargain bin. This one matches its substantial nature with a substantial price of $500. Sadly, the current UK currency fall means that is now £385.
But on the plus side, Kidrobot does ship internationally and you have plenty of time to arrange to get one shipped if you like the idea of surprising a loved one with it this Christmas.
