Don’t bother looking for this one in the ‘middle aisle’ as the Reka budget retro boombox at Aldi is an online exclusive.
Why would you want one of these in 2020? I’ll give you a one-word answer. Cassettes. If you are anything like me (and I hope for the sake of clutter in your home you are not) you will still have a cupboard full of cassettes.
In a world of online streaming that has also seen the resurrection of vinyl, the cassette, despite a resurgence in underground popularity, is still not seen as a credible alternative. So unless you buy a pricey addition for a HiFi set-up or buy something vintage, options for playing your cassettes are thin on the ground in terms of buying ‘new’.
Which is why this is useful. It doesn’t have the kind of sound quality you would get from a premium set-up, but it does play those ‘memories’ and perhaps music you can’t get on Spotify. Whether that’s your homemade compilations or albums that never quite made it into the modern music world.
As you might expect from a boombox, you get FM radio reception, as well as playback for your tapes plus 2 x 8W built-in X-Bass speakers and an option to record. But this isn’t just a re-run of the 1980s. It also sneaks in some modern additions too,
Those additions are Bluetooth technology and a USB and SD card slot. Finishing things off is a headphone slot along with the option of battery or mains technology.
When I say budget I mean budget, with this boombox yours for just £29.99.
