You can’t move for Gazelles these days. But the 1971 Adidas Gazelle trainers offer something a little different.
Currently, only at the official Adidas store right now and on the face of it, there isn’t a huge amount of difference between these and those other Gazelles to the ‘untrained’ eye.
The difference is only evident if you know what to look for. And collectors can probably spot those straight away.
The difference is that this is a shoe based on the 1971 silhouette rather than the modern-day shape. In previous years Adidas was big on the 1980s design of the shoe. This time it has gone back a decade further and simplifying things a little more.
1971 is a significant year for the Gazelle (and other shoes) as it was the year before Adidas went for its now-famous Trefoil logo on the heel, which was introduced in 1972. So the reissue here, as well as being a slightly different shape, also omits that logo too.
But at the end of the day, this is still a Gazelle and has most of the other details that have made this shoe a constant favourite in the Adidas range. So a suede upper, contrast detailing for the heel and the stripes, the gum sole and the Adidas-branded tongue, Gazelle branding to the side too, naturally.
This isn’t a range at all. It is one reissue. So just the blue and white available to buy and only directly from Adidas.
As for the price, a bit more than you would pay back in 1971 and a little more than a standard pair. They retail for £90.
