I love a niche reissue – and it doesn’t get much more niche than the return of the 1980s Adidas Guam trainers.
Niche because this shoe didn’t see the light of day in most countries and, as such, is something of a rarity. At least, it was until Adidas gave this lesser-seen trainer a reissue this week.
Previously, you would have had to have been a buyer in Japan at the point of release (the 1980s) to pick up this particular style. And it is an unusual style too. I suppose the oddness of the design, which looks to be an amalgamation of a few different styles, is perhaps why it has stayed in the archive. At the time, the likes of the City Series and Island Series were a little more slimline and minimal.
But this is more substantial, with a sole that has a touch of the running shoe about it and a front that hints at more of a tennis shoe. Yet, it all comes together well.
The finish is leather, with a tonal upper and rubber outsole. A classic Adidas ridged sole, contrast stripes and heel, plus the Guam name on the side. That’s pretty much it.
Likely to appeal to collectors and anyone who likes a retro all-rounder, you can pick up a pair for £90.
They are available at the Size? website and the Hip website.
