It might look like the real deal, but the budget Verner Panton-style table lamp is actually on the shelves at Asda for very little money.
I own a similar design that’s the real deal. That lamp is the 1960s Verner Panton portable Flowerpot Lamp. Ours is pink and, although small, is pretty useful in terms of the lack of wires. Unless you forget to charge it, of course. That’s always going to be an issue.
Compare the two looks. It’s hard to find much of a difference. It’s the same height, the look is much the same, and the design and functionality aren’t much different either. It’s a small lamp; it does pretty much what a small lamp does.
If you like authenticity, then you might want to get a real one. They sell for around £150 to £160, and they have the rather nice feature of a touch dimmer to adjust the intensity of the light. They also have the option of recharging via USB to keep unsightly wires at bay.
Or go for this one, which has the look, two colour options, an LED bulb included, and a massively reduced price compared to opting for an actual Verner Panton design.
How massive? Well, it’s something like a tenth of the price, would you believe? Take your pick from either of the two colours here, and the price is just £16. If you opt for click-and-collect, there’s no postage either. But even if you get it delivered, it still comes in at under £20. It’s pretty much the bargain of the year for fans of midcentury modern design.
