Shire Publications “The 1960s Home”

519aFxDD94L__SL500_AA300_
Shire Publications specialises in small potted guides to history and hobbies, with an emphasis very much on the quaint and British. Published this month is The 1960s Home, the latest in their series documenting the British home throughout the Twentieth Century.

The 1960s was a rise in owner-occupiers which led to an increased interest in furnishings and luxury goods. Whilst there are many books out there already that focus on the designer furniture and styles of this period, the Shire book looks at the housing and interiors that would be typical of the average home. The little book is just 56 pages long, but covers architecture, textiles, pottery and glass, kitchen and bathrooms, mixing informative text with illustrations.

You can buy The 1960s Home directly from the Shire website, priced £6.99.

For sale: Charles Deaton’s Sculptured House – 1960s space age house from Woody Allen’s Sleeper in Denver, Colorado, USA

Sleeper1

Big thanks to Bob Luedeka for flagging up the sale of arguably the most famous space age house ever built – Charles Deaton's Sculptured House.

You probably know it better as the house in Woody Allen's futuristic 1973 movie Sleeper, but the property pre-dates that year, designed and built in 1963, just outside Denver, Colorado and covering 7,500 sq. ft. over three floors. It was last sold in 1999 by software millionaire John Huggins for $1.3 million, a native of the area who picked up the place in a state of serious neglect – and went about restoring it back to its former glory.

For sale: 1960s Peter Womersley-designed modernist house in Bath, Somerset

Bath1

Not the kind of property you would expect to find in bath, but this 1960s Peter Womersley-designed modernist house in Bath is one you'll not forget in a hurry.

This is apparently the only post war modernist house built within the city,  built between 1966 and 1968 to a bold brick and frameless glass design by Womersley – designed to offer unobstructed views of the surrounding countryside.

For sale: 1930s five-bedroom art deco house in Ilkley, West Yorkshire

Dacre1

For some years, I presumed all the better art deco-styled houses were in the south of Great Britain. But of late, we've found some cracking properties 'up north', including this five-bedroom art deco house in Ilkley, West Yorkshire.

It's an incredibly imposing house. Built back in 1937, it nestles into woodland, overlooking the West Yorkshire countryside and its own grounds, with that 1930s exterior looking faithful to the original design. That's not the case inside.

For sale: 1930s art deco-style house in Greenhill, Weymouth in Dorset

Weymouth1

Not an obvious one from the outside, but take a look inside this 1930s art deco-style house in Greenhill, Weymouth in Dorset and you'll see why we love it. The views aren't bad from the windows either.

Situated in a conservation area, the house is a mix of the old and the new – real contrasts too. The entrance hall is 'reminiscent of a 1930s Parisian hotel interior', complete with original parquet flooring and panelled walls with diamond-shaped insets. The staircase is original too, with rhomboid box panelling and detailed balustrading, while some of the rooms look straight out of the 1930s, contrasting sharply with a very modern fitted kitchen.
