Retro Dashboard Clock

Dashboard_retro_clock

The Dashboard Clock is inspired by the dashboards of classic cars from the 1950s.

Set in a retro cream surround, the clock face is where you would find the speedometer and for added authenticity there are also a barometer and thermometer. Measuring 20cm wide 10.2cm high and 5cm deep it could be used in the office or kitchen.

It costs £25 and is available to buy from Me and My Car via Not on the High Street.

Hire a retro HB Special roadster – complete with period gear

Huet

The car above is a HB Special roadster – it’s not available to buy, but you can hire it for a break.

It’s a modern car made by the Huet Brothers, but based on the classic racers of the 50s. Just 12 have been put into production, all based on the classic Triumph TR6 , with a lightweight carbon fibre body, 2.7 litre engine and modern-day brakes, shock absorbers and suspension plus a stylish retro interior.

You can hire one for a four-day break, with some period racing gear thrown in for good measure, so you can race around some European roads looking the part. Details and (most importantly) prices for 2009 haven’t yet been released, you might want to drop them a line at the website if you’re interested.

Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss speedster

Merc_moss

If you’ve got money to burn, you can burn some rubber in the 50s-inspired Mercedes SLR Stirling Moss speedster, produced in conjunction from McLaren.

The look of this super-exclusive sports star is inspired by the Mercedes 300 SLRs driven by motor racing legend Sterling Moss back in the 1950s. But outside of the looks, this is anything but a throwback car.

Packing a V8 engine, it offers up a top speed of 217mph and 0-60mph in just 3.5 seconds. There’s also a lightweight carbon fibre frame, enhanced aerodynamics, carbon-ceramic disc brakes and an interior that ‘s very much on the side of luxury.

Even if you can afford the £672,000 asking price (yes, you read that right), there’s still a catch if you want one. As this is the last-ever Mercedes SLR, you have to be a previous owner to buy one (though I suspect flashing your pile of cash might just twist their arm).

British Cars of the Sixties by Doug Nye

British_cars

Looking to pick up a classic car and want something with a distinctly British feel? You need a copy of British Cars of the Sixties by Doug Nye.

This isn’t a modern-day book, instead it’s a reprint of a 1970 book, which means you get a contemporary and factual take on the cars, rather than a nostalgic look through some rose-coloured spectacles.

And it means you can get up close and personal with names like AC, Wolseley, Bristol, Triumph, Jaguar, Rover and MG over the 240 pages and 174 illustrations, discovering their original appeal and in some cases. the appeal almost 40 years on.

Just reissued in hard back, you can pick the book up for £13.99.

Original Freestyler – a BMX classic updated

Freestyler

Not a replica, the Original Freestyler is an update of the original 1970s BMX bike ridden by BMX legend Bob Haro.

The new version of the 1978 cult classic features a throwback Haro Freestyle Division frame, Skyway Tuff Wheels with Haro MS4 tyres, tubular 4130 three-piece cranks, 44/16 gearing with ACS Mainline freewheel and as befits a limited edition, chrome aplenty.

If you’re into your BMX, all of that will no doubt mean something to you. if it doesn’t let’s just say it’s a bike that’s both fun to ride and cool to be seen with. The Original Freestyler sells for around the $545 (£355) mark.
