Soulboy northern soul movie gets a UK DVD release

Soulboy

Some months back, we featured a new northern soul movie going by the name of Soulboy, which got a limited UK cinema release and a very positive reaction from cinema-goers and critics alike. If you missed it, you'll be pleased to know that Soulboy is about to be released on DVD in the UK.

It's a typical coming of age movie, with 17-year-old Joe McCain finding his way in the world of the 1970s – as well as discovering the world of northern soul via the allnighters at the Wigan Casino.

The DVD is released on January 3rd 2011, with the addition of some making of featurettes as bonus material. Amazon is discounting heavily, with a copy available on pre-order for just £7.99.

Golden Girls Tote Bag

Il_570xN_168528362
Etsy has thrown up some wonderful items, but seller HutchMe has some of the oddest, as her obsession with 1980s pop culture inspires many of her products, such as this Golden Girls Tote Bag.

The natural colour bag features a graphic print of the four ladies on the front, in a choice of either purple, turquoise blue, gold or pink. Not the most credible reference, admittedly, but it made me smile and I’d be more likely to buy this than one of her Phil Collins cushions! The bags cost $18 (a bit over £11) from Etsy.

Blow-Up movie print by The Scene

Blowup

Fans of Antonioni's swinging London classic movie Blow-Up might recognise and appreciate this Blow-Up print by The Scene.

It is, of course, David Hemmings in classic photographer pose, no doubt capturing some hip young thing through his lens. This archival Giclee print is a limited edition of 25, sized at 11.7 x 16.5 inches and on 250gsm silk white paper.

You can buy one online for £20.

Royal Mail to introduce FAB: The Genius of Gerry Anderson stamps in early 2011

Thunderbirds

Not just any old retro stamp issue, FAB: The Genius of Gerry Anderson stamps also feature action sequences that work with a flick of the wrist.

Buty let's start with the stamps. The basic set features six landscape stamps featuring all of Gerry Anderson's Supermarionation TV shows from the 1960s – Supercar, Fireball XL5, Stingray, Captain Scarlet and Joe 90. Plenty of presentation packs as you would imagine, all with their own added extras. But we like the one with a special pull-out four-page comic, which tells the story of the creation of the Thunderbirds through the illustrations of original TV21 comic artist, Gerry Embleton. Nice.

Dalek Keychain Torch at Firebox

Dalek

Can't say I'm a fan of the phrase 'stocking filler', but if you know someone who loves Doctor Who, this Dalek Keychain Torch at Firebox is pretty much perfect for said description.

Yes, this is a mini Dalek, the evil alien created by Terry Nation in the early 60s and still the most recognisable image of the show, Doctor aside. But not just a mini Dalek – this one also has an ultra-bright LED light at the base, should you need to find the keyhole in the dead of night.

Batteries are indeed included and the price is £6.99.
