A tribute to John Hughes

You might not admit it, but deep down everyone loves a John Hughes movie or two, so it's sad to hear of his passing, aged just 59.

So why not rifle through your movie collection and dig out Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Weird Science, The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, The Great Outdoors or Uncle Buck. All will guarantee you some 80s-style nostalgia, along with some cracking entertainment. Ok, they might have dated, but that's half the appeal.

Or just check out the trailer to the Breakfast Club below. Gone, but unlikely to be forgotten for a generation – and still the best teen movie maker of all time, without question.

I Love Retro are selling these Retro Film Illustration Prints, which make an interesting change from the standard film posters.

There are six films to choose from; Taxi Driver, To Kill a Mockingbird, Don’ Look Now, The Shining, Harold and Maude and Buffalo 66 (although the last one is more cult than retro, unless the 90s already count as retro).

The prints measure 11 inches by 16 and cost £24.95 each from I Love Retro.

William Shatner, Intergalactic Love God print by Nick Dewar

Shatner love god

This amusingly
entitled William Shatner, Intergalactic Love God print was actually produced for
an exhibition in Canada containing 76 images inspired by the life and career of Shatner. Artist Nick Dewar has plumped for the golden
era of Captain James T. Kirk picking font
and distinctive imagery to match up with the Shatner era he is depicting.

It measures
18 by 24 inches and is available in green or yellow from Dewar’s site, costing
$50.

Supergran heads to DVD for the first time

Supergran

If you've got a soft spot for 80s kids TV, you just might be the kind of person who will love Supergran, which heads to DVD for the first time next month.

For the uninitiated, Supergran first hit our screens back in 1985, the tale of Granny Smith (Gudrun Ure), a sweet old lady living a sedate life in the Scottish coastal town of Chisleton. That's until she is accidentally struck by a stray beam from Inventor Black’s magic ray machine and transformed into 'Supergran', using her powers against Chisleton’s local villain, The Scunner Campbell, and his unpleasant cohorts, Dustin and Muscles.

Alongside regular cast members Iain Cuthbertson and Bill Shine, Supergran also features guest appearances from the likes of George Best, Lulu, Spike Milligan, Patrick Troughton, Charles Hawtrey and Geoff Capes, with a theme tune by Billy Connolly thrown in for good measure. Series one hits the stores on 10th August 2009, covering two discs and selling officially for £19.99 (although Amazon has already marked it down to £12.98 for pre-orders).
