Coming soon: Telstar The Movie

You really couldn't make up the story of maverick early 60s producer Joe Meek, so we expect his eventful life and career to make a pretty impressive flick when it hits the big screen as Telstar The Movie.

Yes, we expect the works – a rapid rise to fame, weird and wonderful 60s pop,  London in its swinging infancy, madness, depression, bizarre studio equipment, heartbreak, paranoia, murder and suicide. We might even get some drug taking and a touch of the accult too.

A decent cast too, including Kevin Spacey, Con O'Neill, Pam Ferris, James Corden and Ralf Little, plus a top notch soundtrack obviously. Look out for it in cinemas from June 12th, enjoy the trailer below.

Bily Liar House print by Jonathan Wilkinson

Billy-liar-house

You may have seen the work of Jonathan Wilkinson previously when we featured his Gateshead 'Get Carter' car park print. This new print, The Billy Liar House, features another northern suburban icon – the house made famous in the classic 1963 film Billy Liar.

The house looks the same now as it did in the film, and can be found overlooking Shipley and a post-industrial landscape in Baildon on the outskirts of Bradford. ‘Hill Crest’ (as it is named in the film) sits atop a hill and is an inseparable backdrop for many of the film's key scenes.

The litho print is sized at 40 x 30.5cm, and is a bargain £20 including free postage and packaging. It is must for any fan of the film or fan of Jonathan Wilkinson.

Flipside – the BFI brings cult cinema to DVD and Blu-ray

Bed

The name Flipside is certain to be familiar with cult film lovers out there – the BFI has been putting on events under that name for many months, unearthing overlooked gems and cult classics for the big screen, as well as bringing in the people behind those movies for Q&A sessions and adding a few related shorts for added entertainment. And now Flipside is bringing those movies to DVD and Blu-ray.

The label follows the same path as the film events, digging out genuine lost classics, getting some informed comment for the booklet and packing each one with a host of extras. if that's not enough, all the films are newly-mastered in HD from original film elements.

Coming soon: Awaydays the movie

Awaydays

It's not at the cinemas until May 22nd, but we've just got the first news (and images) from the movie adaptation of Kevin Sampson's superb late-70s set novel, Awaydays.

Set during the dawn of the 'football casual' era, Awaydays is in one way a tale of Tranmere Rovers' hooligan following and its meetings with other firms in the third division. But just as much (if not more), it's also a tale of the era – unemployment, drugs, fashion, clubs and the post-punk music scene of the day. If it's done well, it could be one of the films of the year.

See over the page for a couple of large stills from the movie, as well as the official trailer for it.
