Bmovie_cards

Christies Vintage Film Poster auction

Maggoo

Back once again is the Christies Vintage Film Poster auction, taking place on 11th March 2009.

In truth, the selection this time is fairly uninspiring – lots of Blow Up, Breakfast At Tiffany's and Bond posters up for sale at a premium price. But if you dig deeper, there are a few rare gems. One of those is an Alan Aldridge Chelsea Girls poster (between £3,000 – £5,000), but more affordable is the classic Qui Êtes-Vous, Polly Maggoo?

An obscure 1966 fashion flick, its imagery has become far more famous than William Klein's actual movie and this 32 x 23-inch French linen-backed poster is sure to be popular. And with a guide price of around £400, it might be a shrewd investment. You can bid online for this or any other poster or you can head down to the South Kensington salesroom if you fancy waving a bit of card yourself.

British New Wave Classics reissued on DVD and Blu-ray

New_wave

Two British New Wave classics are re-issued on DVD and released on Blu-ray in new high definition transfers by the BFI on 23rd March 2009 – Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.

Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960), stars Albert Finney, Shirley Anne Field and Rachel Roberts. In the industrial streets and factories of Nottingham, Arthur Seaton (Albert Finney) spends his days at the factory bench, his evenings in the local pubs and his nights in the arms of Brenda, the wife of a fellow factory worker. Arthur is anti-authority and unashamedly amoral – indeed, he's the original 'angry young man.

Breakdance and Breakdance 2 reissued on DVD

Breakdance

Dust off the lino and slip on a pair of old school Adidas, Breakdance and Breakdance 2 are heading to DVD in their original widescreen glory for the first time on 6th April 2009.

Dusted down from 1984, the original Breakdance sees dance student Kelly (Lucinda Dickey) growing disillusioned with her mainstream dance teachers, finding solace with street dancers Turbo (Adolpho Quinones), Ozone (Michael Chambers) and of course, a spot of breakdancing.

Breakdance 2? Well, more of the same really, with Kelly, Turbo and Ozone using breakdancing to raise cash to fight a developer who wants to knock down the local youth centre.

Citizen Kane they are not, but if you want some old school fashion, tunes and dancing, it's here by the bucket load. Both are officially priced at £15.99, but expect the usual discounts from online retailers.

Minder – The Complete Collection on DVD

Minder

Well, with the new version currently underwhelming us on Five, it seems like the perfect time to reissue the original Minder in its entirety, namely Minder – The Complete Collection.

That title says it all, this is the original (and indeed classic) TV series, which ran originally from 1979 to 1994 over 10 series, with George Cole as wheeler dealer Arthur Daley and Dennis Waterman as Terry, his 'Minder'. Over 33 discs and 108 episodes, you can watch some of the finest comedy drama ever produced in the UK, as the pair make a living (one more than the other) on the mean streets of London. There's even the full-length feature film on here as a bonus (Minder On The Orient Express), along with all the usual DVD extras and commentaries.

Trust me, it's every but as good as you remember it – probably better – and in a different league to the remake. Look out for it from 16th March 2009, priced officially at £129.99 (but likely to be discounted by the big retailers).

Visions of Utopia: Le Corbusier at the Barbican

Mon_oncle

If you're a fan of Le Corbusier's modernist design and architecture, you just might want to get yourself down to London's Barbican for the appropriately-named Visions of Utopia: Le Corbusier at the Barbican.

The season runs from 7th March to 10th May, with the Barbican highlighting events, films, music, performances and talks accompanying the Barbican Art Gallery exhibition Le Corbusier – The Art of Architecture (more on that later). Some of it might be a little too heavy but related movie showings including Jaques Tati's Mon Oncle (pictured above) are certainly worth checking out. See over the page for the full program.
