A tribute to Reg Varney

Reg Varney – one of Britain’s finest comic actors and of course, star of classic 60s/70s sitcom On The Buses, sadly died this weekend. But he did at least manage to rack up a fair old innings of 92 years. Interestingly, Varney was also the first man to use a cash point – opening the first machine in Enfield, North London, back in 1967. Remember that if you ever do a pub quiz.

Anyway, rather than ramble on, how about we just feature a clip – like the intro to the first On The Buses movie from 1971 – the highest grossing British movie of the year, even taking more at the box office than the year’s Bond movie (Diamonds Are Forever). If you’ve never seen the show, this clip tells you just about everything about it. Here’s to you Reg…

Christies’ Pop Culture auction in London

Marquee
The forthcoming Pop Culture auction at Christies is something of a mixed affair, covering everything from pop art to film posters and music memorabilia. And one item in particular covers all bases.

This is a Quadrophenia poster from the 1979 movie – but it’s not any old Quadrophenia poster. This is actually a prop from the movie, announcing The Who’s upcoming residency at London’s Marquee club. I can’t say for sure whether this is a mock up or a copy of an original – maybe someone out there knows?

Sized at 76 x 51cm, it’s selling for what sounds like a fairly reasonable £300 – £500, especially when you consider how unique this item actually is. Find out about the poster and all the other lots via the link below – the auction takes place at the South Kensington auction house in London on 4th December 2008.

James Bond’s Lotus Esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me up for auction

Esprit

It’s one of the most famous screen cars of all time – and James Bond’s Lotus Esprit could be yours.

The car stole the show in the 1977 flick The Spy Who Loved Me, not only for its ability to speed around the Italian scenery, but for its ability to dive underwater and fire missiles. Sadly, you can’t do either of the last two (it was all special effects), but if you want to whizz about the country in a Roger Moore slacks and blazer outfit, this is the car for you.

The car itself was stripped of its movie extras (like the missile button and periscope screen), but was later painstakingly restored at great cost to the movie spec, all those buttons and gadgets going back where they belong. Check out the gallery for loads of images, then speak to your bank manager – it’s expected to sell for between £100,000 and £120,000 at the Olympia, London on 1st December 2008.

Jimmy’s Lambretta scooter from Quadrophenia up for auction

Quad_scooter

A piece of movie history is going through Bonham’s auction room later this month – the scooter rode by Jimmy Cooper in the cult mod flick Quadrophenia, complete with its original KRU 251F number plate.

It’s a Lambretta Li 150 Series 3 scooter, originally dating from 1967 and being sold by current owners Allstyles in Portsmouth. The bike is on its third owner since the movie finished, but has been overhauled to a high standard fairly recently – although this does mean some of the original parts have been replaced by modern spares. Its recent used has been mainly confined to shows and press events of late – a possible money spinner should you want to invest in it.

And it might need to earn its keep, with a hefty estimate being quoted by Bonham’s, between £20,000 and £25,000. Check over the page for a picture of the bike in the movie or check out the Bonham’s site for more on the bike. The auction is being hosted at the Knightsbridge branch on 25th November 2008.

Arkwright’s Open All Hours shop up for auction

Arkwright

That icon of the British sitcom – Arkwright’s Open All Hours shop – can be yours, with the property going up for auction this month.

Sadly, it’s not actually a grocer’s shop – the BBC used to refit the Beautique hairdressing salon in Lister Avenue, Balby, Doncaster every time they wanted to film, but if you want to convert it to a full time shop, it shouldn’t be hard. Indeed, it could well be a goldmine for any budding Ronnie Barkers if you opted for an authentic refit complete with Arkwright-branded merchandise.

Also included in the sale is the upstairs one-bedroom flat and outside toilet, which is expected to make between £120,000 and £130,000 at auction in Leeds on November 24th. If anyone fancies chipping in for it, drop us a line – we’re more than keen.

Robin’s Nest: The Complete Series on DVD

Robins
If you happen to have 20 hours of your life spare and want to devote that time to the 70s British sitcom, we have just the thing – Robin’s Nest: The Complete Series.

Amazingly, this Man About The House spin-off was groundbreaking – the first time an unmarried couple were shown as living together. Aside from that, this is very much your typical comedy of the day. Based around a Fulham bistro (when was the last time you heard that word), Robin (Richard O’Sullivan) is helped by his girlfriend (and later wife) Vicky (Tessa Wyatt), who’s father Mr. Nicholls (Tony Britton) finances he eaterie – but doesn’t care much for his daughter’s squeeze. Oh yes – and there’s a one-armed Irish dishwasher called Albert Riddle (David Kelly), always on hand for a bit of mayhem.

A review is pretty much redundant – you’ll already know if this has a place in your collection. And if it does, the 7-disc set can be yours via Network for an RRP of £49.99 from 3rd November 2008.
