Advent Calendar from the V&A

V&A

I know Bonfire night is still echoing in our ears and we are onto Christmas already, but advent calendars are needed in place by the 1st December any later just isn't good enough!

This lovely calendar from the V&A has a great classic feel to it and not a nasty cheap chocolate in sight. The design was adapted from a game found in a Russian book in the V&A collection, which explains the lovely font and illustration.  The calendar is printed in the UK on FSC paper stock with vegetable based inks so ticks the environmental box too.

Beano Flask from Colloco

Beano-covers-flask

The Beano has such a huge army of loyal fans that I am sure this flask will have huge appeal, though it isn't the most obvious product you would choose to feature the Beano.

The flask has a faux leather wrap with Beano cover artwork to keep you amused whilst you eat your soup / drink your tea.  Buy yours at Colloco for  £16.95.

Maybe they will do a hipflask featuring Viz artwork next?

Sesame Street celebrates 40 years with Google

Google_sesame

Seen the Google homepage today? Well, depending on where you are in the world, you'll see a classic Sesame Street character hiding within the log – the UK currently has Cookie Monster, as you can see from above.

It's to celebrate 40 years of being a hip kids TV show, mixing bold and (usually) entertaining literacy and numeracy-based features with good old-fashioned humour that appealed to both adults and kids.

It also wasn't afraid to bring in some hip types to mix it with the puppets and presenters. Check out Grover and Steve Wonder throwing out some tunes in our featured clip, then see here for Stevie Wonder doing one of the funkiest versions of Superstition you'll ever hear on the show. Happy birthday Sesame Street – you don't look a day over 20!

Cherry Cake and Ginger Beer by Jane Brocket

Ginger beer

Will 2010 be remembered as the year of nostalgia? Cherry Cake and Ginger Beer is certainly going to appeal to those who love Famous Five style picnics without a packet of wotsits in sight.  Written by Jane Brocket, the book is packed full of recipes that featured in children's stories from way back with descriptions of the specific book alongside the recipes.

So if, as a child, you wondered what parkin was, or what Swallows and Amazons' bunloaf tasted like, this book gives you the opportunity to find out for yourself. The book doesn't have any photography which may be a help or a hindrance depending on your viewpoint, but at least it gives it an authentic vintage feel.

Priced at £12.99 you can buy the book on Amazon.

Rocking Horse Card Kit from Alice Melvin

Alicem

We have featured Alice Melvin's work before here on Retro to Go, and she has now added to her range with a great collection of cut out and make greetings cards.

I love this card featuring a traditional rocking horse that would be really pleasing to make. The cards include instructions, so all you need is scissors, glue and a little time.

Priced at a super reasonable £2.50 you can buy them and see the rest of the range here.

Rockabye Baby CDs

Img_3526_1

It is tempting to indoctrinate your children in the ways of decent music as early as possible, but perhaps your Led Zeppelin collection isn’t the best thing to soothe them to sleep. A solution is offered in the form of the Rockabye Baby CD series.

Classic songs have been transformed into instrumental lullabies using the glockenspiel, vibraphone and mellotron. The Rolling Stones, The Beatle, Led Zepplin, Bob Marley and Johnny Cash are amongst the artists who’ve received the Rockabye Baby treatment. There is also a disc of Pink Floyd songs, although I find the originals pretty soothing as they are.

Each CD costs £12.95 and can be bought online from Horsefall and Wright.
