Girls’ heads cushions

Girl head pillow

It's hard to know what to call these items: describing them as girls' heads cushions belittles their charm somewhat. Each pillow features a different imaginary girl – a blonde, a brunette and a red head – illustrated in a style that reminds me of classic children's story books, such as the Milly-Molly-Mandy stories. The brunette is actually the logo of the shop, VintageJane, which sells these cushions alongside second-hand finds.

The design is silk screened onto the front and the cushion is backed in vintage fabrics. Measuring about 32cm in diameter, each cushion costs $18.

Belle & Boo kids illustrations

Bellebootree

The style and feel of the Belle & Boo illustrations made me think it was a lost childhood series that I'd somehow missed out on while growing up. In fact they are a modern creation, drawn by Mandy Sutcliffe. Her style deliberately references old children's illustrations portraying very innocent, timeless snapshots of the world.

The illustrations are available across a wide range of products, from greeting cards to children's clothing. Pictured is Autumn from the My Favourite Place set, typical of the Belle & Boo style. Each print in the set shows the retro-dressed girl sitting contemplatively in a tree from a different season of the year. The set of four framed costs £140 and would be a charming addition to any kids room.

Olli & Lime “George” Wallpaper

Georgewallpaper

Olli & Lime make products for children and they suggest that their George Wallpaper is used in a nursery or child’s bedroom. But I think it could work just as well in a child-free household.

The paper is available in a choice of two colours; milk chocolate or lime green, decorated with white stylised flower patterns. The chocolate colourway in particular could be used in any adult room. The wallpaper costs £35 per 52cm x 10m roll.

You can buy online directly from Olli and Lime.

Knoll Kids – mid-century classics for children

Knoll1

If you want to instill an appreciation of classic design into your children from an early age, you need to kit out their rooms with items from the Knoll Kids collection. Although it just might set you back the best part of your savings to do it.

Knoll Kids are essentially sized-down versions of classic mid-century design from the Knoll catalogue, including Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona chair and stool, Eero Saarinen's Womb chair, Harry Bertoia's Diamond chair and our favourite, Kazuhide Takahama's 1960s Suzanne lounge seating (as seen above).

The size might have shrunk, but the quality and attention to detail are exactly as you would find in the 'grown up' versions, which means the prices aren't a million miles apart either. We haven't found a UK stockist of these as yet, but they are on general sale in the US, so that gives us a rough guide on prices. The Suzanne seating starts at $1,652, the Diamond at $530, the Womb chair at a staggering $2,380 and the Barcelona is yours from – wait for it – $3,674.
