Soft Dali Clock for Kids

T_2729_2The disintegrating clock is the image most associated with Salvador Dali and its no surprise that museums and galleries are selling Dali-style timepieces. However, Dali’s work isn’t really something you would usually think of as being for children, but the Salvador Dali Museum in Florida is selling a Soft Dali Clock for Kids.

The clock is made from bright coloured foam but still features Dali’s signature melting appearance, although in this guise it looks fun rather than the stuff of nightmares you’d usually associate with surrealism.

It costs $19,95 (approximately £10) from the Salvador Dali Museum website.

George Nelson Zoo Timers

561 In sharp contract to the Eye Clock and other George Nelson clocks we’ve featured previously, the renowned designer also produced a range of clocks for children, the Zoo Timers.

Although also manufactured by Vitra, they could not be more different from his other clocks. These designs showcase Nelson’s talent as a graphic designer and reflect the more playful design trends of the 1960s. There are four in the series, each one a brightly coloured cartoon animal. Pictured here is Talulah the Toucan, but you can also choose from Omar the Owl, Fernando the Fish or Elihu the Elephant.

They are available from Nest priced around £75 each.

Retro Sailor Money Box

Sailor_money_box_1Bathtime in the Seventies meant Mr Matey bubble bath. The lurid blue foaming liquid came in a cute bottle that looked like a sailor. In fact (if my memory is correct) it looked a lot like this Sailor Money Box from Buy The Sea.

The coin slot is in the back of the brightly blue sailor but Buy The Sea won’t reveal how you get the money out. To unravel that mystery, you’ll have to buy one. They cost just £5.99 each and delivery within the UK is free.

Vist Buy The Sea to order.

Variant Children’s Clock

Clock202Design from the former East Germany (or DDR) is now highly collectable and here is an interesting example.

Originating in East Germany in the 1970s, this Children’s Clock was made by a company called Variant, about whom I sadly know nothing more. The clock is nonetheless rather splendid, featuring a bright orange case, bold numbers and coloured cogs. Originally it came dismantled, the idea being that the child benefited from the achievement of putting it together. Now it is ready to go, there is no reason why it should just be for a child’s room.

Idylic currently have one available to buy for £27.
