Kanteleen Kutsu mugs for Marimekko

Kanteleen

I'm not going to pretend I fully understand the history behind these Kanteleen Kutsu mugs for Marimekko, but I do like their mid-century vibe.

Designed by Sanna Annukka, the mugs feature designs that are very much in that mid-century Scandinavian style, but the the bear, flower, squirrel and bird featured on the mugs are actually much older in origin, derived from classic Finnish folk tales.

No matter what the origin, they look great and that's good enough for me. All the designs are printed on porcelain mugs and are sold in packs of two, priced at £25.

Tara Starlet Cowgirl Shirt

Cowgirl shirt

Menswear has been reviving and reinventing the western style shirt for many years, but they’ve failed to make a convincing dent in women’s fashion. With a genuine look, cowgirl shirts can be ideal for a 50s style retro look, like this one from Tara Starlet.

The Cowgirl Shirt takes a classic gingham print to root the shirt firmly in early Americana. The design isn’t overdone, avoiding the Dolly Parton-esque country costume look. The peter pan collar and prim neckline combine to make this a sweet and wearable retro top.

Available in blue and red or yellow and black, get one from Dollydagger online for £42.

Button Wood Stud earrings from Miss Selfridge

Miss selfridge button

Bright colours in earrings big or small are a perfect finishing touch for a mid sixties retro look, and thankfully they can often be a bargain on the UK high street. Miss Selfridge have obliged with these wooden Button Stud Earrings.

Available in a pack of three, they come in great shades of yellow, green and red. The muted colours are ideal for retro looks, eschewing the overly bright look that would take us into eighties territory. With the added button effect look, there's an added cutesy factor that's perfect for the era.

They cost £5 for a pack of three.

Armani Casa Baloon art deco armchair

Armani_seat

Art deco doesn't have to mean dusty old antiques, you can get a modern take on the theme with this Armani Casa Baloon armchair.

It's almost like a cartoon version of the art deco theme – big and bold, with the chair sat on a black nickel-plated iron base, which supports those oversized bielastic fabric curves in beige or dark brown.

It doesn't come cheap though – around £4,100 for either colour option.

Nineties Britain souvenir badge pack

Nineties

Is it too early to start classifying the 1990s as retro? Possibly yes. However the messages contained in these Nineties Britain Souvenir Badge Pack manage to say something in these cash strapped times and will probably resonate with Retro To Go readers who have never given up on jumble sales.

The badges are some of the work of Mark Pawson, who is a badge maker extraordinaire and has hundreds of designs up for sale on his website. This set costs £3. Not quite 50p but sadly those days have long gone…

Cacharel Liberty print shorts

Liberty shorts

Liberty seems to be having a bit of a moment. As well their prints being used by Gap and in the soon-to-be launched Kate Moss collection for Topshop, they are also working with Cacharel, resulting in some stylish numbers such as these orange pleated shorts.

It's not the first time these two have collaborated: they first worked together in the sixties to produce a liberty patterned blouse which is one of the designs featured in this collection. The shorts pictured use the 'Charras' print, itself first released in the 1930s, and then reissued in the seventies. The high-waisted loose flowing style manages to tie all these historical influences together and make them look totally contemporary. Prices for the collection range from £75 to £200, these shorts are £80.
