Tatty Devine Acoustic Locator Brooch

Acousticlocator

More modernist style comes in the form of this Tatty Devine Acoustic Locator brooch. Tatty Devine's fun and retro designs are well known on these pages but this piece comes from a darker place: the acoustic locator was a device used in World War I to detect oncoming planes through funnelling sound. Inspiration for the brooch came through the modernist photographs of Pil and Galia Kollectiv currently on display in Tatty Devine's Brick Lane shop.

Even without knowing its story, the geometric shape and futuristic look of the piece makes it a striking piece of jewellery. The piece is made from four different pieces of acrylic – mirror, glitter, silver and black – to really make it stand out. The brooch costs £39 and it's also available as a necklace for £36.

Liliana sunglasses by Tom Ford

Tom ford sunglasses

Oversized sunglasses are everywhere of late, showing both 60s and 70s influence from the runways to the highstreet. If you're after something that's still retro, but a little less ordinary, these Tom Ford sunglasses tick all the right boxes.

The Lilianna Sunglasses feature a cross metal frame and a large, bubbly lens shape to give a truly unusual, chic seventies look. Both the thin frames and the variegated lenses are a chocolate brown shade that's a direct route to many 70s styles.

This pair is available online from My Wardrobe for £239.

Sailor Betty pin up style swimsuit by Lolita Girl Clothing

Lolita swimsuit

It's certainly not the time of year when most of us are digging out our swimwear and flip-flops just yet, but if you're looking forward to sunny days or jetting off to warmer climes this is the perfect time to snap up your brand new bathing costume.

This Sailor Betty swimsuit is by Lolita Girl Clothing and is a really wearable pinup style suit for the beach or water. While many pinup suits are just for show, this is practical too with figure hugging fabric that moves with the body. The skirt overlay is just short enough to create a perfect silhouette without becoming impractical, while the stitch detailing and the halter neck combine to make this a nautical classic.

Get it online from Baby Girl Boutique for $96.

Rodchenko cup and saucer

Rodchenko

If you fancy introducing some Russian modernist chic into your home, this striking cup and saucer has been produced to accompany Tate Modern's current exhibition, Rodchenko and Popova: Defining Constructivism. The exhibition explores the role of these two artists in post-revolution communist Russia. As their main aim was to move art out of the gallery and into everyday life, they created dynamic designs for books, textiles and theatre design, for example, as well as for the highly important business of drinking tea.

It is based on a 1922 design by Alexsandr Rodchenko, realised in fine bone china, and it reflects the simple and powerful use of colour and pattern associated with the artist that remains influential today. It costs £31.32 from the exhibition shop.
