Bauhaus bird house

Bauhaus_bird

The French House
does a nice line in quirky bird houses, but our favourite has got to be the Bauhaus bird house.

Yes, this is a modernist home for your feathered friends, offering something more functional and minimalist in a 1930s-style.

And if the birds don't like it, you'll still have one of the coolest birdhouses on the block to show off Not badly priced either, yours for £34.95.

Comet_chair

A modern design with its inspiration in the 1960s – the Comet Chair by Johanson Design.

The work of Team Johanson, the seat offers that  space age seat with a plywood frame and foam padding, covered with a choice of fabric, vinyl, leather or suede. And it's all completed by the Tulip-style base, pictured here in chrome, but also available in a selection of colours.

With so many options, pricing is a bit vague, but expect to pay something around the £700 mark for a chair like the one above.

Fred Perry Gingham sandals

Fred perry shoes

It'll soon be time to free your feet from the seasonal constraints of socks, boots and everything that Winter brings. If you can't wait to plan ahead for the Spring and Summer months, these Fred Perry gingham sandals will certainly lift spirits.

Both these pairs of gingham flats are designed in classic fifties styles. The backless style is a simple, comfy flip flop with a sporty edge that's typical of Fred Perry. On the right are the more structured peep toe flat pumps. Easy to dress up or down, this pair can be worn with almost everything in your retro wardrobe.

Both pairs are available online from ASOS.com.

Steepletone Dixie Radio

DIXIE-BK

If you are content with just FM and MW radio stations, then the Dixie Retro Radio looks good for very little money.

It is made by Steepletone who do quite a lot of these retro designs, this one being based on a 1960s style. It is black with silver trims, features a large white LED analogue display and a large rotary On / Off volume control knob. There is also a pink version available but that looks far too much like a Barbie accessory.

The Dixie radio costs just under £20 from Just Click Radios.

Camper Van Doormat

Doormat

Another product featuring the counter-culture vehicle of choice. The Camper Van Doormat is a colourful welcome mat featuring a cartoon of the VW camper van.

To add to the hippie vibe, the van has a “Love” license plate, a red heart on the front and is surrounded by flowers. It woudl almost be a shame to wipe your muddy feet on it.

It costs £15.50 from the appropriately named Karma Babes website

Bialetti Moka Express – 1930s stove-top espresso maker

Moka

Design classics don't have to cost the earth, you can pick up the Bialetti Moka Express for under £16.

It's the original (and still the most popular) stove-top espresso maker on the market, the work of Alfonso Bialetti back in the 1930s, this hexagonal pot is alleged to be in over 90 per cent of Italian homes. The reason for its popularity? Well, to quote the designer, you can make coffee just like you'll find in a bar 'without requiring any ability whatsoever'.

And that's still the case today. The machine is easy to use and easy to clean (it has self-cleaning valves). But best of all, you can use it on just about any type of stove or hob. Take your pick from a three-cup, six-cup or nine-cup model, with prices starting at £15.95, rising to £24.95 for the largest model. Oh yes, looks great on a shelf too.
