A tribute to Oliver Postgate

Woke up this morning to the sad news that Oliver Postgate had died, aged 83.

The name might not mean much, but for many UK readers of this site, Postgate provided the pre-school entertainment – the man (and voice) behind Bagpuss, The Clangers, Ivor the Engine and Noggin the Nog to name four. And all are still popular today – doing brisk business both on DVD and in merchandising sales.

He might be gone, but I suspect his work will continue for many years to come. Here’s some Bagpuss as a tribute – check out YouTube for much more of this and all his other shows.

Bosa Travel Doghouse – shaped like a vintage suitcase

Doghouse

Remember the retro Pet Caravan? Well, the same designer is back with more doggy design – the Bosa Travel Doghouse.

That designer is Marco Morosini and the new design is based on a vintage suitcase, the idea being that you can carry the ‘house’ around with you. Although I suspect a ceramic suitcase with platinum detailing holding a small dog would take some carrying.

Indeed, this is only suitable for a small dog, being sized at 54 x 40 x 28cm. And for seriously loaded small dog owners, with a price tag of 670 Euros.

Limited edition Fiat 500 by Diesel goes on sale in UK – but online sales only

500_diesel

Remember the Fiat 500 by Diesel? We featured it a couple of months back, but suspected it wouldn’t be made available in the UK. We were wrong.

Yes, you can now get your name down for a limited edition Fiat 500 by Diesel in the UK, but you have to do it online. Fiat is offering 10,000 of the limited editions to UK buyers on a ‘first come first served’ basis, with the option of configuring to your heart’s content and (we presume) home delivery.

Oluce Fiore space age suspension lamp

Oluce_fiore

We have featured Oluce previously, most notably for its range of Joe Colombo-designed lights and lamps. But they don’t just specialise in a vintage designs, they also offer a nice line in retro designs too – like the Oluce Fiore suspension lamp.

Very much in the 60s space age style, the Fiore (designed by Marco Romanelli and Marta Laudani) is a mix of chrome and blown glass, with a choice of seven or 13 bulbs for the diffused light. If you’re after that 60s/70s look, it’s hard to beat.

Prices start at around £700.

Junkshop Gem: Cook Now Dine Later by Catherine Althaus and Peter Ffrench-Hodges

Cooknow

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover – but I think we know what we’re getting from Cook Now Dine Later by Catherine Althaus and Peter Ffrench-Hodges.

Yes, this is 60s dinner party territory. But not only that, according to the preface, this is a book that will ‘appeal to any bride who intends to go on working after her marriage.’ And one with a strong stomach too. The food in here is pretty astounding – we’ve tried to find a recipe we might be able to keep down, but so far haven’t dared go near one.
