It’s not everyday you can get to meet a legend from the world of fashion, but that’s the case on Friday 23rd January 2009.

It;s the date of Mary Quant – Inspired By, a talk by Mary Quant at London’s V&A. According to the V&A, the event will be a discussion focusing on ‘the highpoints of her career’, which sounds like a must-attend night for anyone with an interest in 60s fashion, design and retailing  – or anyone with an interest in swinging London.

Tickets are on sale now, priced at £8, with the event taking place at the Lecture Theatre from 7pm until 8pm. Don’t forget your rarities for signing.

Miss Selfridge Knitted Bib Dress

Selfridge_bib_dress

Navy is more than just a colour when it comes to retro fashion, as this nautical inspired winter dress clearly proves. From Miss Selfridge, this dress uses Breton stripes and bib detailing to great, and unusual, effect on a knitted winter dress.

As with most woolen frocks, this is great for casual daywear, but thanks to its fifties style wiggle shape this one can easily translate into something for the evening too.

It’s available new from Miss Selfridge for £38.

Ollie & Nic cosmetic bags

Ollie_nic_cosmetic_bags

Cosmetic bags that are well designed are a really ideal Christmas gift for a girlier recipient. Ollie & Nic‘s new range is especially worth the purchase thanks to the fact that they’re equally good looking enough to serve as handbags or purses too.

While any old thing will often do for makeup, a cosmetic bag or vanity case that you really love feels like a treat, and is a really easy gift idea for girls who aren’t so easy to buy for. Opt for vintage framed purse styles, or a ditsy print floral vanity case as shown.

“The Ladies” Plates

Ladiesplate

Designer Caroline Silfverling takes her inspiration from the past, and her love of old movies is very much apparent in “The Ladies” Plates.

The bone china plates feature black and white illustrations of glamorous pin-up girls amongst romantic roses. They will add a touch of glamour to your table and it almost seems a shame to cover the design with food.

They cost £120 for a set of four plates from Rockett St George.

Olli and Lime Egg Orange range – 70s-style design for kids

Egg_orange

I’m not sure if your kids would thank you for turning their bedrooms into a 1970s time capsule, but if you fancy trying out a retro vibe, you should check out the Olli and Lime Egg Orange range.

Take your pick from a range of home furnishings, all with that distinctive ‘Egg’ design – bedding, a quilt, a blanket, a small cushion and to complete the effect, two types of wall art – the latter including a really cool owl print. And if you don’t like orange, the same design is also offered in lime and teal (otherwise known as green and blue).

Prices start at £35 for the cushion, rising to £65 for the quilt, with everything else sitting somewhere in-between. See the site for loads more images.
