Book Review: Sleeveface by Carl Morris & John Rostron

Sleeveface_book_2If you’ve never heard of the phenomenon of Sleeveface, you’re one of very few it seems. From its beginnings as a game among vinyl lovers across the web, this frankly brilliant idea has now been very deservedly turned into a book.

With the apt tagline "Be The Vinyl", this compendium of the best Sleeveface photographs, taken by vinyl junkies across the globe, is a great talking piece for any Christmas coffee table.

Lovingly compiled by the hands of the inventors, who dreamed up the idea while larking about during a DJ set, this is a book that is either high art, something ingenious, great fun, or all of the above at once.

It’s available from Artisan Books from the 1st of December for £8.99. No vinyl worshipper’s coffee table should be without.

Pop Flower Wall Stickers

Domestic_v053_pop_flower_gold

There has been a glut of wall stickers available recently, but the Pop Flower Wall Sticker by Ich&Kar is worth a mention.

It will make quite an impact on your wall. It measures 150cm by 100cm but it isn’t just the size that will make an impression. The design is a psychedelic style flower and it comes in bright colours that are also reminiscent of the 1960s flower power era.

Authentics website have the Pop Flower Wall Sticker in a choice of the blue, beige and yellow combination shown here or an even brighter range of green and yellows. It costs £31.45, which is a small price to pay to completely transform a wall.

Hanna Mug

Hannamugs

The Hanna Mug is designed by Hanna Werning and inspired by Swedish nature. It is available in a choice of six main colours (black, blue, green, pink, yellow and the newly added brown). Regardless of which colour you chose, the colours and pattern give the mugs a retro look.

As they don’t have a handle they probably aren’t that suitable for the usual use, namely holding a hot beverage, but they are shown in a variety of other different uses (plant pot, toothbrush holder, ice cream sundae bowl) so I’m sure you could find a place for them in your home.

They cost £7,73 each from the Scandinavian Design Center.

Floodlamp – shaped like an old-fashioned floodlight

Floodlamp

Good old-fashioned floodlight pylons are rapidly becoming a thing of the past at many football grounds, but you can keep the spirit alive in your own home with the Floodlamp.

Yes, shaped like the old pylon-style lights (the ones you could climb up as a kid), this particular version is made of aluminium, with six separate bulbs able to brighten up the darkest of spaces. And unlike the real thing, this version has a swivel head so you can direct the light.

Perfect for an office desk, even better for a high class Subbuteo set-up, it retails for £69.95.

Michelle Mason 1930s-inspired tote bags and cushions for Transport for London

Tfl1

Transport for London has collared a number of hot designers to create something new and useful using the London Transport archive – and these Michelle Mason Colindale tote bags and cushions certainly fit the brief.

At first glance, they might look quite contemporary, but that leaf motif (Colindale) was originally created for London Transport by Marion Dorn back in the 1930s, adding a classic twist and a talking point to a pair of everyday items.

The bags retail for £14.99, while the cushions sell for £19.99. See an image of the latter over the page.

Shag’s latest limited edition print – In Search Of Tiki

Shag_tiki

Shag’s love of all things Tiki continues to inspire his artwork – indeed his new In Search Of Tiki print features very little else.

We love it – both for the subject matter and that rather cool green and brown colour scheme. In fact, I’ve already found a spot for it in the living room. Just 250 being made available, all 16-colour serigraphs and sized at 58 x 73cm.

Signed and numbered by the artist (as you would expect), the print officially goes on sale tomorrow. But if you follow the link below, you can get in before the masses. it retails for $250.
