Ercol Originals in Black range launches

Ercol1

Ercol still produces some of its mid-century gems under the Ercol Originals label – but has made a concession to the modern era with its Ercol Originals in Black range.

Essentially it’s a reissue of key designs from the 1950s, but in a more ‘modern’ matt black finish (as opposed to the more natural look of the standard range). Take your pick of items like the Nest of Tables above, the Love Seat and Windsor dining table (both pictured over the page), all dating from 1956.

You can order all online, but prices aren’t cheap – you’re looking at £525 for the Nest of Tables, with the Windsor dining table selling for £875. See the website for the full range.

Jasper Garvida Cocktail Dress

Jasper_garvida

The ubiquitous Little Black Dress is almost inescapable for most women, with every season telling you there’s a new must have style. While all the hype can be a bit much, it is undeniably an eternal classic, especially one with sleek retro looks that will endure.

This Jasper Garvida cocktail dress is a muted 50s style that’s perfect partywear. Rather than the cartoonish and overdone sweetheart prom style, the high boat neck and simple composition are enduring and won’t date either.

It’s available online from Oli for £70.

Furni x Raised By Wolves limited edition 80s-style digital watch

Furni_new

Regular readers might recall the limited edition Furni x Cool Hunting watch from last year, matching up cool retro style with a ridiculously low price point. Well, Furni is back again, this time with the Furni x Raised By Wolves limited edition 80s-style digital watch.

Equally as stylish, this collaboration with Canadian label RbW (Raised By Wolves) has produced a water-resistant digital timepiece in black, red or cyan, offering up functionality like an hourly chime, 12/24-hour display and a dual time mode, not to mention a phone book, stopwatch, countdown and multiple alarms.

There’s also a custom engraving and if you go for the combo set (red and cyan watches), you also get a 3D book thrown in absolutely free. But here’s the best part – it retails for a ridiculously cheap $28, with the combo set coming in at $58. Shipping is worldwide too – for the equivalent of just £2.50 for up to two watches.

Marimekko Keisarinkruunu Mug

Keisarinkruunu

Moving away from the beloved Unikko print, here is another Marimekko product. The Keisarinkruunu Mug features another print by Isola, dating back to 1966.

The yellow, grey, black and white pattern doesn’t immediately suggest the Sixties and reminded me of the designs by Peter Saville for Factory Records, which isn’t a bad thing at all.

The mug is available to buy online from Saga Living for $10 (around £6).

Surrealist Duck Feet Lamp

Vlb20decayedgold

The Duck Feet Lamp isn’t strictly a retro product but it is a design that has been inspired by the Surrealists and that Dali himself would surely have loved.

The lamp’s base is in the shape of duck legs and webbed feet in a decayed gold finish. It is supplied with the pictured smoke blue silk shade, but other silk shades can be requested.

It costs just over £660 from LightingWeb.

For sale: 1960s Jean Prouve-designed house in L’Isle Adam, Val d’Oise, France

Prouve2_2

If you have money to spend on a European retreat in this volatile financial climate, you might want to check out this Jean Prouve-designed house in L’Isle Adam, Val d’Oise in France.

Jean Prouve (the man behind the likes of the Cite armchair and the Compas desk) designed this space age property back in 1967, with restoration (thankfully in the same spirit as the original) undertaken in 2003, saving original features like the large picture windows, the metal structure and the roof terrace. The view remains unchanged too – sat in the middle of the Vexin nature reserve. And when you get bored of that, Paris is just 45 minutes away.
