Pre-war inspiration at Warehouse

Warehouse_retro

The high street’s latest vintage inspired kick is the twenties and thirties, featuring a whole lot of deco and flapper inspiration. If fringed Charlston style dresses are a bit too costumey for you, there’s thankfully a lot of easier, more sleek routes to the look.

These tops from Warehouse are a perfect example of the pre-war thread running through their Autumn/Winter collection, with chiffon, beading and classic florals the key embellishments. They’re a great way to evoke the grandeur of the 1920s without looking like you’re in fancy dress.

Paul Smith’s limited edition Lomo Fisheye camera

Ps_fish

Almost two years back, we featured the original Lomography Fisheye camera. And now we have a limited edition version – the Paul Smith Lomo Fisheye camera.

For Fisheye think circular photography – images through the eye of a fish, not unlike some classic 60s album sleeves, through its 170-degree lens. And if you want to know what you’ll get before you shoot to 35mm film, there’s even a Fisheye viewfinder.

Obviously this is a limited edition for Paul Smith, so you get the PS stripes and signature lens cover, which all adds to the price. The original sold for around £30 – the new one sells for $150 (around £94)

Joe Orton’s Entertaining Mr Sloane returns to the London stage

Sloane_poster

Joe Orton’s breakthrough 60s play Entertaining Mr Sloane is to have a revival – hitting the London stage from January 2009.

Not just a play, also a superb movie (reviewed over at Cinedelica), Entertaining Mr Sloane revolves around Sloane (played by small screen mod Mathew Horne of Gavin & Stacey fame), who charms his way into the house of middle-aged spinster Kath (Imelda Staunton) and her gay brother Ed. Both compete for Sloane’s affections, leading to blackmail and eventually murder.

The English Touring Theatre production kicks off at Trafalgar Studios 1, 14 Whitehall Street, London SW1 2DY, running from 22nd January to 11th April 2009. Further details and tickets are available from the link below.

Matthew Hilton Buffalo chair for SCP

Buffalo

Judging by the name and look, I’m guessing this Matthew Hilton Buffalo chair is very much inspired by the classic 1960 Erik Jorgensen Ox Chair.

Perfect for budding Bond villains, the Buffalo chair, has that horn-like back and generous arm rests in multi-density foam, all stood on a retro-styled circular swivel base in black aluminium.

What we don’t know for sure is the price – but we would guess it’s in four figures. Drop SCP a line if you want to know specifics.

Arts & Architecture, 1945-54

Artarchmagazine

This is something for the serious design enthusiast only.

Launched in 1945, “Arts and Architecture” was a groundbreaking journal that covered not only art and architecture, but also music, design, politics and social issues. Taschen has now re-issued the publications from 1945 to 1954 as a special set of ten boxes, each containing one year’s magazines.

It is limited to 5000 numbered copies and costs £400 (hence the warning above), but it is sure to give a fascinating insight into the designs and ideas of the period.

It is available to order online from Amazon.
