Trompe L’Oeil Umbrella Stands by Piero Fornasetti

Pfumbrellastands_2

Whilst the Enzo Mari umbrella stand below is the epitome of understated style and function, the Trompe L’Oeil Umbrella Stands by Piero Fornasetti are an entirely different matter.

There is a range of interesting designs, which all have signs of Fornasetti’s trademark love of strong graphics and surrealism. His love of classical imagery is also apparent in the designs “Ancient Vases” (pictured here), “Ruins” and “Ancient Heads”. My favourite is the amusingly literal Umbrellas design. Other designs involve hats, cats and luggage.

Describing a quirky item as a “talking point” is probably an over-used expression, but in this case, it is true and frankly for the price of these, you would need it to be a real conversation piece. Prices start at $1244 (around £700) for classics designs up to $2,419 (over £1300) for Umbrellas. To view the whole collection, visit the Unica Home website.

Eretteo Umbrella Stand

1850

Perfectionism was one trait of the designer Enzo Mari, but equally he was eclectic. We’ve previously featured books, waste bins, prints and calendars by the Italian and now the Eretteo Umbrella Stand can be added to that list.

Designed by Mari for the company Magis, it comprises of translucent PCC slats coming out off a coloured base and topped with a coloured ring. The base and ring come in a choice of red, blue, white and two shades of grey.

It costs £50 from Panik Design and is a stylish way to keep your hallway or office tidy in the inevitable rainy season ahead.

Gubi Chair

Gubichair

Designed by Komplot in 2003, the Gubi Chair is on one hand a very modern product. It was the first industrial product to be made using an innovative moulding technique with 3D veneer (not a process I claim to have any understanding of). But select the Gubi Chair in the Walnut veneer option, and suddenly it takes on a mid-century style.

The Gubi is a great multi-purpose chair and as illustrated here, it is stackable. It costs £398 in the Walnut finish, which is by far the best style.

It is available to buy from Nest.

Isla Swing Coat from John Lewis

Isla_coat

A swing coat can be difficult to get right, but when it is, it’s absolutely perfect for Winter style. This Isla coat from John Lewis is about as close to the perfect swing cut I’ve seen lately, and provides a great silhouette that’s very retro indeed.

Made in a cosy wool mix, the A-line skirt makes this a perfect 60s take, and the oversized collar gives it an extra something.

It’s not available until the 10th Nov, but you can get it from then in either black or purple for £150.

The City Wakes – Syd Barrett Tribute

Syd_barrett_aged_16

Despite a relatively small musical output, the legacy of Pink Floyd founder Syd Barrett can hardly be overstated. His story is well-known amongst music fans yet it continues to be a source of endless fascination.

Perhaps surprisingly “The City Wakes” is the world’s first official tribute to Syd Barrett, coming just over two years after his death (when we were finally forced to admit that there wasn’t going be a reunion or comeback). Fittingly the events are mainly taking place in Barrett’s hometown of Cambridge. It is an ambitious programme of events that have been organised by arts and mental health charity Escape Artists and it will be a celebration of his art as well as his music.

The Varoom jacket by EC Star

Ec_star_varoom

Mod style fashion for the girls that isn’t either vintage or, well, a dress, is a bit of a struggle to locate at times. EC Star keep coming up with the goods with their continuing designs, including this Varoom jacket.

In a yellow stretch denim, it’s not what you’d expect, but the looks have it all sewn up. A nehru collar, slim fit and slightly belled 3/4 length sleeves give this a sleek mod-inspired cut that’s perfectly complimented by the almost scooter-girl feel.

It’s available from Pin Up Girl Boutique for $96.
