Recycled Tin Penguin Clock

PenguinclockArtist Mark Brown makes mixed media sculptures and clocks in his backyard studio in Easthampton, Massachusetts. The Penguin Clock is one such creation.

As will become obvious if you look at it for a moment or two, it has been made from recycled kitchen pieces and vintage tins. No two designs will be exactly the same.

It costs $120 (around £70) from Uncommon Goods. If Penguins aren’t your thing, there are other creatures clock available by the same designer.

The New Vintage range at Oasis

Oasis_new_vintage

Oasis have been channeling vintage inspiration in their main designs for a number of seasons now, but with often questionable degrees of success. It seems a smart move, then, to go all out with their New Vintage range, consisting of updated and/or reproduced vintage finds.

Taking inspiration from the twenties and thirties with their jewellery and a handful of drop waist dresses, they’ve tapped into a growing trend for pre-war styles with flair. Less enamouring, though, are some of the 70s inspired pieces, which are a bit on the lacklustre side.

Charles Anastase retro coat

Anastase

If you’ve got the urge to buy a very sensible coat that goes with everything, but don’t need yet another black wool number, grey is a great, safe option. This Charles Anastase coat has great looks and is wearable with almost every outfit.

The Peter Pan collar and high double breasted buttons give this a dolly-ish 60s look, but the sharp grey wool rescues it from looking cutesie. With riding coat style black accents on the pockets and back, this coat has classic written all over it.

Unfortunately, it’s by no means a bargain style, at £1028 from Matches Fashion.

KnollStudio Sample Sale – bag some mid-century bargains

Tulip_plat
Looking for some classic design at knockdown prices? You need to make your way to the KnollStudio Sample Sale at the showroom in Smithfield, London.

It takes place on Saturday, 6th December 2008, running from 10am until 1pm. Not much of a clue as to what will be available, but as Knoll is the sole licensed manufacturer of the likes of the Barcelona Chair, Wassily Chair and the Saarinen Tulip and Bertoia Collections, you could have some iconic pieces of furniture at ‘greatly reduced prices’ by Christmas. The only difference is that these are ex display and photoshoot samples, so if you can deal with a few fingerprints, get in there.

And if you get in there early enough, you could pick up the ‘star buy’ of a Black Leather Barcelona Chair for £750 – well worth missing a couple of hours sleep for.

Warhol Shoe Print in a Vintage Frame

Warholshoes

Perhaps not immediately recognisable as the work of the infamous pop artist, these beautifully framed shoe prints are indeed by Andy Warhol.

There are two prints available, each featuring a vintage-looking shoe with a famous saying with the word “shoe” inserted. The pink and blue court shoe print bears the words “you can lead a shoe to water, but you can’t make it drink” whilst the pointy green and yellow shoe print has the words “shoe bright, shoe light, the first shoe I’ve seen tonight”.

They are finished in a vintage white frame and are available to buy from Heal’s for £125. You can buy the prints unframed elsewhere on the internet, if you want to recreate the look yourself.

Vintage Lace Curtains

LacepanelsLace curtains are a vintage style that hasn’t quite crossed back over into mainstream décor and to many minds will still be the preserve of nosey neighbours. However, the small selection of Vintage Lace Curtains currently available from Rockett St George manages to dispel any images of suburban snoopers.

It is the modern colour palette (rather than the off-white of old) that makes these curtains worth considering. They are available in a choice of lipstick pink, candy pink, aubergine and blue. They measure 91cm x 230cm and cost £100 each but Rockett St George may be able to supply other sizes upon request.

Visit the Rockett St George website for more information.
