I usually start with an outside view of a house, but the kitchen in this 1970s detached house at Bowness on Windermere could be a page from a 1970s design magazine.
It's not – this is a house up for sale right now, with much its structure and interior largely unchanged from the decade that produced it. Obviously the agent says it's a 'blank canvas to the new purchaser to redesign and create their ideal home'. But if you love the 1970s, it probably offers much more than that.

The house was built in 1939, but gained that notoriety in 1940 when the house was owned by a 'go-between' between the IRA and the German Nazi regime. Indeed, it was used as a safe house for an SS officer – and when it was raided by the police, the owner was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison. The SS man had already departed. We hunt high and low for interesting houses and by looking at the exterior of the Miramar house in Mackworth, Derby, Derbyshire, it might not look like our most exciting find. But amazingly, parts of this house are still much the same as they were in the 1950s.
Miramar is a detached, single-story house, designed by noted Derby architect Derek Montague and built for a local businessman in 1952, despite having the looks of an earlier, art deco era. It stands in an elevated position, with plenty of country views, which is best viewed from the floor-to-ceiling picture window in the entrance hallway.
What can you say about Six Pillars? Well you can say it's grade II-listed, as well as a modernist masterpiece. It's also on the market right now.
Six Pillars was built in 1934 for the Head Master of Dulwich College and was the work of Berthold Lubetkin's architectural practice, Tecton, It has been updated in recent years under the direction of renowned architect John Winter, but is still very much one of the finest examples of modernist architecture in Britain.

It was designed by E. Maxwell Fry, whose partner was Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus, back in 1935, situated in the heart of Chipperfield village. I suspect, back in the day, it was quite an oddity. In truth, it still is.
