Surpil SL10 chair by Julien Henri-Porché

Surpil_01_500

The Surpil SL10 chair designed by Julien Henri-Porché has a long history, dating back to 1927, but came from a very practical need.

It was designed foremost for functionality: suitable for use in public spaces and also able to be stacked. Made from metal, the choice of material reflects the need for practicality. However, the chair still manages to look elegant and worthy perhaps of something more than outdoor furniture.

The price would suggest so too: it costs £228.

Fiell Fashion Sourcebook: 1920s

1920s sourcebook
Fiell Publishing launch a new book series with their Fiell Fashion Sourcebook: 1920s.

The series aims to examine the fashions of the twentieth century decade by decade. This book (as the name suggests) takes a look at the twenties. There's an introduction that puts the fashion into context before it heads onto the main reason for buying this book – the images. There's over 600 of them for inspiration, spread over the 576 pages of the book, including photographs, illustrations and advertising.

If this has fired your enthusiasm, you'll be pleased to hear the next in the series – looking at the fashions of the 1930s – is due out at the end of the June.

The book is currently available for £21.21 on Amazon.

1920s and 1930s Magazine Cover Blinds

1995
I’m wary of the concept of printed roller blinds, especially if printed with your own holiday snaps, but Creatively Different Blinds has some that could convince me otherwise, in particular these Magazine Cover Blinds.

The images are from an archive at the Mary Evans Picture Library and consist of magazine covers mainly from the 1920s and 1930s, so feature illustrations in the style of that period. The blinds are made to fit your window size, so prices vary depending on your measurements, but expect to pay from £105.

Plus 4 Garden Furniture Set by John Jenkins

602518_m
The Plus 4 Garden Furniture Set by John Jenkins is part of Heal’s ReDiscovers collection.

The garden table and chairs set is inspired by a classic Ambrose Heal design from 1923. Like some of the best retro dining sets, the Plus 4 is designed with space saving in mind, with the chairs tucking neatly around the edge of the table. The table and chairs are made from teak and there is a hole in the centre of the table for a parasol.

The set costs £995 (it promises to save space, not money!) from Heal’s.

Juke armchair from Made.com

Jay_armchair_oatmeal_sack_hessian_lightbox_1

We've featured a number of homewares recently that look like they've been made by re-using old sacks, this Juke armchair from Made.com takes that trend one step further with the entire upholstery looking like it's been made from wheat sack.

Despite its appearances, the makers claim the upholstery is apparently very comfortable. It's been custom made especially for the chair which, with its curved arms and tapered legs, takes its inspiration from the 1920s. It's a slightly odd mix of classic shape and nontraditional fabric. If that look appeals to you, remember that – like all Made.com products – it comes with a long waiting time, in this case eight to ten weeks.

The chair costs £499.
