Phaidon Design Classics for the Apple iPad

Phaidon

Way back in our formative years of 2006, we feature what's still a must-have series of books – the Phaidon Design Classics. Well, times change, as does technology, so in 2010 you can now pick up Phaidon Design Classics for the iPad.

It really does look stunning, almost (but not quite) tempting us into investing in Apple's much-hyped tablet. For your money, you get the history of (primarily) 20th century design, just about everything worth owning with 1,000 timeless designs in full colour from the giants of our age, all in chronological order and in this version, rendered stunningly in 3D.

If you've got an iPad (or plan on doing so soon), Phaidon is doing the book conversion for $19.99 initially. Or you can still opt for the traditional book set, which is priced at £100.

Violent Elegance’s La Mela-inspired t-shirt

Redappletshirt

We featured La Mela (The Apple) a while back. Designed by Enzo Mari in 1963, its influence continues to be seen everywhere, not least in these t-shirts from Violent Elegance

The t-shirts feature the same graphic depiction of the apple, right down to the black stalk. The simplicity of the design works well printed onto the white cotton American Apparel t-shirts they've used. Those who are less purist may be interested to know the design is also available with a green apple (different to Mari's original red design).

The t-shirts cost £26.95.

Apple chopping board from Lotta Kühlhorn

Apple_cuttingboard1

Following on from the post earlier in the week, here's more exciting news for those on the lookout for interesting chopping boards. We've previously featured Lotta Kühlhorn's fabulously coloured apple mugs and her range for retro etc. includes several other great designs, such as this apple chopping board. Like the mugs, they use the repeated Pop-like motif of an apple, reflecting her interest in 1970s design.

They're in-store in Skandium but sadly not on their website and, while the mugs are widely available, I've struggled to find an on-line retailer for the board. However, you can get them through FromSthlm, a US based retailer who also stock Kühlhorn's apple coasters. The board costs $32, while the coasters cost $14 for a set of four.

Next apple storage set

Apple uncropped

Here are more goodies from Next who have come up trumps in their latest kitchen collection. Following on from the apple memo board featured earlier in the week, here's a similarly fruity storage set. The five piece set has containers for keeping all your kitchen essentials, from bread to biscuits. Each has a white finish with a repeated apple motif and a red lid to match the plain lettering. The simple design means the set could fit easily into a retro-inspired kitchen.

The set costs £32.

Next apple memo board

Apple memo board crop

Like the Balmoral mugs featured last week, this apple memo board from Next clearly references Enzo Mari's 'La Mela'. Even without knowing its predecessor, its graphic red outline will stand out in any kitchen or hallway. Usefully it comes with five further apple shaped magnets, perfect for pinning up notes or photos, and a pen for scrawling messages across the board. The board costs just £22.

You may also be interested in the fruit patterned mugs in the left of the image which feature the same apple motif and also a corresponding pear design. A set of the four mugs is even more of a bargain at £7.
