For sale: 1930s seaside art deco house in Porth, Cornwall

Deco1

Yesterday we featured an art deco house that was pretty much still in its original state. Today, we have the flipside – this 1930s art deco house in Porth, Cornwall.

Details on its history are scarce, but was almost certainly the seaside retreat of someone with plenty of spare cash all those years ago, renovated (possibly over-renovated) with an interior that's straight out of the modern era.

For sale: Melville Aubin-designed Sunpark 1930s art deco house in Brixham, Devon

Sun1

All too often, we feature art deco houses on these pages that have been over-renovated, still with key period features, but without the character of the original properties. That's not the case with the Sunpark art deco house in Brixham, Devon.

Art Deco style Normandie chair from Benchmark

Normandie chair

You can't beat the Art Deco style for added instant glamour to your home. It's that era that informs these Normandie chairs from Benchmark.

The clue is in their name. Designed by Terence Conran, he's drawn inspiration from the famous Deco liner SS Normandie which entered service in 1935. This translates into the sleek lines of the chair which are available with either an oak or upholstered back and in natural oak, or a 'mocha stained' colour. The chairs don't come with the striking geometric fabric pictured (though you can ring the company and ask about it) and instead they're upholstered in the customer's own fabric, allowing you to make your own interpretation of the look.

This glamorous look comes with a price tag of £595.

Frinton1

Yes, we're still being overrun with stylish 1930s properties, this time a mix of classic and modern with the Skye Haus in Graces Walk, Frinton-on-Sea, Essex.

A three-bedroom detached house on a private road on the Frinton Park Estate that's just a stone's throw from the sea, it was built in 1934-5 by architect J T Shelton under the guidance of Oliver Hill. It was one of 35 houses built on a development that was intended to showcase the best in British modern design, all under the guidance of the most innovative young architects of the day. Even now, it's a head turner, despite its modest size.
