Newgate Monroe mirror

Monroe-mirror

Recreate the dressing room of a silent movie star with the Newgate Monroe mirror. The mirror looks deliberately vintage and is decorated with decoupage-style images of cosmetics, perfumes and mementos like photographs and postcards. Indeed it's so glamorous you'll probably have to do your make-up before you can bring yourself to look in it!

It's available in two sizes. The small is 27cm high and costs £29.95 while the larger version is 60cm high and costs an additional £44.16. .

Walthamstow dog track plate

Walthamstow dog track plate

Walthamstow's famous dog racing track closed down in August last year to great sadness so the site could be redeveloped into housing. As well as being known for its racing, the stadium became known in its own right, being the location for much of the artwork of Blur's Parklife album amongst many other things. The stadium is commemorated in this dog track china plate by Alice Mara.

The stadium opened in 1933 and the digitally printed illustration shows the stadium's iconic Art Deco Grade II listed façade, as well as a lone, colourful greyhound. The plate costs £80.

Canning and Sheridan Deco-style Central cabinet

Canningsheridan cabinet

If you've been inspired by BBC Four's current series 'Art Deco Icons' and want to get the look for your own home, you may be interested in Canning and Sheridan's Golden Age collection which includes the Central cabinet, featured above.

Inspired by the glamour of the 1930s, it's a multi-doored angled cabinet made in a choice of either natural or dark stained palisander. There's also a choice of handles – natural brass, or for full on Deco-style, chrome. This cabinet is 125cm high and costs an eye-watering enough £8995 but if you are thinking really big there's a larger size available too for £11, 495. Rather appropriately that model is called the Grand Central.

Deco-style console table from Dwell

Dwell console

Dwell frequently crops on this site for its reasonably priced furniture with a 60s and 70s look. So it's a pleasant surprise to see them referencing a slightly older era as part of their new autumn collection with this console table. The clean lines of its walnut sloping legs combined with the black tempered glass top means the table gives more than a nod to Art Deco style. It's an elegant design and it will be interesting to see if they produce other items of furniture along these lines.

Though it's a slightly different look to some of their pieces, the price remains just as accessible at £179.

Art deco-styled Midland Hotel in Morecambe – now under new management

Midland_1
We’re big fans of the art deco-styled Midland Hotel in Morecambe, but as our review said, we didn’t think the service (the restaurant in particular) was any match for the stylish surroundings. That could be about to change.

Owners Urban Splash has partnered up with high-end hotel group English Lakes Hotels, maintaining its ownership, but giving over the management and marketing of the hotel to English Lakes. That hopefully means someone answering emails, a restaurant on a par with the surroundings and a hitch-free online booking service. Essentially, dealing with all the things that have let it down so far in our eyes (we’re presuming they can’t do anything about Morecambe itself).

Saying that, the hotel is still worth a visit, especially if you love art deco architecture, retro-styled interiors and bracing seafront walks. You can check out our full review here or visit the Midland website below.
