BUILT bags featuring Alexander Girard designs

Girard built

Some of Alexander Girard's best known designs are getting another outing on these bags from New York company BUILT. They're reproducing three of his classic mid-century designs on a range that encompasses everything from phone sleeves to shoulder bags.

Slightly controversially for a designer who was well known for his textile designs, these bags are made from neoprene. Their shapes reflects the rest of BUILT's bag range and which is likely not to everyone's taste. However, a nice detail is the charm that comes on all the bags – a mini version of Girard's 'Love' design.

Prices start at $25 for the phone sleeve.

Sam’s Garage wooden briefcase

Sam's suitcase

A contemporary play on a classic look, this wooden briefcase from Sam's Garage takes its cue from luggage from the 1950s and 60s. The briefcase is made out of bent plywood and uses a silkscreen applied geometric design at either side of the case. The result is very tactile and, though it may be not too practical for carrying around, is a pretty good look for storage in the home.

The version shown is appropriately called the retro edition but they sell two further cases each with very different looks: one with a pretty bird design and the other with the markings of a shipping container. Each case costs $185.

Thomas Paul Luddite cases

Luddite

The Thomas Paul Luddite cases are the perfect gift for those who have trouble grappling with the changing technologies of the twenty-first century. Named of course after the nineteenth century group who tried to prevent the changes brought by the industrial revolution, they are heavy weight cotton bags that have been hand screen printed with relics of past technology.

So for example, on the left of the image above, is a case showing a gramophone: perfect for carrying around a MP3 player. The typewriter is on a laptop sleeve and the camera is shown on the case for the slightly more portable version that exists today. You can have fun guessing what is shown on the phone, cosmetics and pencil cases.

Prices vary. The MP3 pouch and camera case are both $24, while the laptop sleeve costs $50.
