Lifestyle Illustration of the 50s by Rian Hughes

Lifestyle illustration of the 50s
You may remember the bumper book Lifestyle Illustration of the 60s we featured a little while back. It's sister volume has now been released, which goes a little bit further back in time – yes, it's Lifestyle Illustration of the 50s.

Also written by Rian Hughes, it features over a 1000 images spread over its 576 pages and shows some of the social aspirations of the post-war era, presumably as seen through the eyes of some of the Mad Men of the time. Some of those dreams, not to mention the technological innovations of the period, of course now seem quaint to modern eyes, all adding to the book's charm. As well as being an author, Hughes is also a graphic designer and illustrator so is well placed to make the selection of images.

The book is currently available for £18.71 on Amazon.

Brave new world
Got a bookworm for a kid? Or just want to encourage some intellectual leanings? Out of Print have now expanding their range of clothing featuring classic book jackets to include a range for kids.

No doubt like the children that they'll dress, the t-shirts range is small but perfectly formed, featuring just four titles: Catcher in the Rye, Moby Dick, Pride and Prejudice and the striking 1936 cover of Brave New World pictured. Each design is printed onto a 100% cotton tee.

Each t-shirt costs $22 and, like the grown-up versions, with each purchase a book is donated through the charity Books for Africa.

Handcrafted Modern by Leslie Williamson

Handcrafted modernism

Looking for some interiors inspiration? A flick through the 200-plus pages of Handcrafted Modern by Leslie Williamson should give you some ideas. As implied by its subtitle, 'At home with mid-century designers', these are directly drawn from the homes of some of our best loved designers.

In this highly visual book, photographer Williamson goes to the homes of 14 different mid-century designers to look at their own interpretations of modernism. As part of her quest she only visits homes that have been left unchanged (although some are now museums), including the abodes of George Nakashima, Harry Bertoia and Charles and Ray Eames, as well as the highlight of seeing inside Walter Gropius's Bauhaus home in Massachusetts, USA.

Published by Rizzoli, it's currently for sale for £25.50 on Amazon.

Stacked paperback wallpaper at Anthropologie

Paperback wallpaper

Bibliophiles should embrace this stacked paperback wallpaper from Anthropologie

Designed by Tracy Kendall, the paper is hand-screen printed with images of piles of vintage and second hand looking paperbacks, spines placed out for easy browsing. To be honest, this is quite similar to what my house looks like anyway (and I imagine that of most book lovers), but at least with this there's no danger of them toppling over!

Each roll is 46cm with a repeat of 63cm and costs £128.
