Pocket Classics – working half-scale versions of classic cars

Pocket

Ever dreamt of owning a Porsche Speedster, a Mercedes 300SL, a Jaguar E-Type or a vintage Jeep? Well, that dream might be a little nearer with Pocket Classics.

From the name, you might expect these to be toy cars for your desk. Oh no – these are working replicas of classic cars, but at half scale. Take your pick from the four models mentioned above (none of them branded for legal reasons), each one faithfully recreated with a composite GRP body shell, steel chassis, twin rear hydraulic disk brakes, and semi automatic gearbox. There's also  working headlights, indicators and horn, with a top speed of 46mph.

All cars are built to order, but it's worth noting that they are toys. So not road legal. Which means the £9,995 price of each one will undoubtedly make it the most expensive toy you ever buy. See the website for images of the other models on offer.

eBay watch: 1960s Fiat 500 van

Fiat_van

Here is a real gem and we suspect, something of a rarity – a 1960s Fiat 500 van.

It dates back to 1968 and according to the seller's description, has just 6,893 on the clock. You might want to confirm that. Aside from that, it has a slightly longer profile (it is a van, after all), but still has a soft top and a 499cc engine.

It's said to be 'in superb condition for its age' (with some improvements cosmetically for sure), has an MOT and of course, is tax-free. The bottom line price on the eBay site is £6,995, but you can make an offer if that is a little rich.

eBay watch: 1965 Jaguar S-type owned by Dita Von Teese

Dita

I've always associated them with 1960s and '70s TV and movie villains, but this Jaguar S-type on eBay is owned (and being sold by) Burlesque superstar Dita Von Teese. if you want confirmation of that, she has confirmed it on her Twitter feed.

It's a rather tasty 1965 model with 70,000 on the clock, one that looks to have had a lot of care and attention thrown at it – new paint job, new front and rear rubber seals, new new brake system etc etc. There's also a black leather interior, wool carpets and 'roses etched in the glass'.

It 'runs and drives very nice' apparently and comes with a personal note to the buyer along with a signed photo. Note that it's a left-hand drive and located in California. Bidding right now is at $5,100.05 with no reserve. Lots more images on the listing page.

eBay watch: Fully-restored 1971 Fiat 500 Lux

Fiat

To be fair to Fiat, the company has done a superb job with the modern-day reissue of the Fiat 500. But the vintage ones just offer that little but more character, as this fully-restored 1971 Fiat 500 Lux demonstrates well.

This is an impressive, low-mileage model – just 25,000 on the clock over those 40 years, would you believe. It's also a 'fully and thoroughly restored' Fiat 500 with 'all works carried out by a UK Fiat authorised dealership'. That means all mechanics, electrics and bodywork, with the car ready to go as a regular ride or for shows.

Sold with the original handbook and Italian logbook (yes, it's a left-hand drive), the current price is £1,020. Many more images on the website.

eBay watch: Low-mileage 1980s Lotus Excel SE car

Lotus

Fancy doing the rounds in an extravagant drive of a bygone era? Check out the Lotus Excel SE that's on eBay right now.

Amazingly, this car has had just two owners since being built in 1986 and has done just 60,081 miles in that time. Emigration means the current owner is looking for a third owner to take it on. Just 100 miles ago, it underwent a £1,000 service, along with new discs, pads etc. It's also currently undergoing re-commissioning work and an MOT and comes with a full service history plus a recent AA/RAC inspection.

Possibly a future classic (they just don't make cars like this anymore), it's available for £3,995 on a 'buy it now' or you can make an offer.

2012 Volkswagen Beetle gets an official launch

Beetle1

Apparently the 'new' Volkswagen Beetle has been around since 1998, so VW thought it was time to go back to drawing board. The result is the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle, which is officially launched today.

If you want to just see the pretty pictures, check out over the page for those. But if you want detail, read on. Launching at car shows in Shanghai, Berlin and New York, it's likely to appear at dealers from late 2011, offered in various guises – a 170 horsepower 2.5-litre version, a turbo-charged 2.0-litre four-cylinder TSI engine or the latest TDI turbo diesel unit. This is no Fiat 500 competitor, that's for sure.
