50s-style Valance Clock

Valance clock

Want a 50s-style clock for your home but can't quite justify the price tag attached to a George Nelson design? For a budget version, take a look at this valance clock

It's certainly got that period look, with wooden petal shaped arms radiating out from the central dial and contrasting silver-coloured arms. Measuring just over 50cm diameter, it's sure to look striking in a room.

And the price tag? It's a reasonable £65.

eBay watch: Sankyo Digi-Glo 1970s digital alarm clock

Sankyo

It looks good – and this Sankyo Digi-Glo digital alarm clock is still a functional item too.

Dating back to the 1970s and out of Japan, the clock has that 'Glo' of a back light to see the time at night and the 'Digi' of the hours, minutes and a continually moving seconds dial. A loud buzz to get you out of bed too and a design and colour that screams the era.

The condition is described as 'great' and the price right now is a very reasonable £7.51.

eBay watch: 1970s Bodet BT630 flip wall clock

Flip

This kind of thing is being remade with a modern twist, but you can't beat an original – like the Bodet BT630 flip wall clock.

A French wall clock from the 1970s, it's reminiscent of the Gino Valle 1960s clocks, offering up a brown case, large flip numbers for the time and an automated date function too. But there's a large 'but'…

The clock was a 'slave' to a 'master' clock, not designed to work alone. However, you can buy a part on eBay to get it to work alone. Which is probably why it's only selling for £1.20 right now. But if you get it and get it working alone, it could prove a very shrewd investment.

eBay watch: Gino Valle-designed Solari Udine Cifra 6 1960s flip clock

Valle

An iconic and influential design – yet this Solari Cifra 6 flip clock is currently on offer on eBay for just 99 pence.

The clock was designed in 1965 by Gino Valle, one of a series of similar clocks, this being the largest in that series. In terms of features, it's good for going on your wall or on a table (stand included), with mains power keeping those silkscreen printed digits ticking over. There's also a cream and white plastic case, plus a clear acrylic front.

It's not a perfect example – there are a few signs of age and missing a couple of screws (which are easily replaced). But that shouldn't put you off too much – this is a sought-after design and at retail, they tend to sell for fairly high prices.

eBay watch: 1970s space age Pfaffle alarm clock lamp

Pfaffle1

A design that could only have come out of the 1970s – this Pfaffle alarm clock lamp, which is up for grabs on eBay for not a lot of cash.

According to the seller, the lamp was designed by Knox for Pfaffle, a mix of chocolate brown plastic for the structure and brushed aluminium for the lamp section. Not just a lamp though – this is an alarm clock too.

‘Digital’ clock by Chroma Lab

Digitalclock_full

We must have shown you hundreds of clocks over the years on Retro To Go, both of the digital and analogue variety. Well, the Digital Clock by Chroma Lab combines the look of one with the mechanism of the other.

Look closely at those numerals and you'll realise that they've been painted onto the clock face and it's digital by name only. This contrasts with the quartz mechanism that enables you to actually tell the time.

Like the combination? Each clock is hand-made and costs $59.
