I’m not suggesting that this is in the same league as an Eames desk or George Nelson’s Home Desk, but if your budget won’t stretch beyond the high street then Next’s Retro Desk could be worth a look.

Desk One from Another Country
Another Country's Desk One gives a contemporary design update to an old-fashioned style school desk.
While the essential components of a desk are there – a drawer, and an indentation in its top to hold your pens and pencils – this is probably far higher quality of anything you ever sat at while in school. It's made in the UK, produced in Dorset to be specific, from solid oak/ash. It's been adapted for twenty-first century demands too, with an option of a cable tidy to accommodate computers and the like. Pick from the natural version pictured, or a black finish.
The desk costs £895.

Architect’s lamp from Bluesuntree
Looking for a lamp with retro style? How about this Architect's lamp from Bluesuntree?
In terms of the lamp's head, it's a very similar shape to one of Arne Jacobsen designs for Louis Poulsen, done in the early 60s. Couple that with the adjustable aluminium body and the weighted steel base and you've got a handsome design at a reasonable price.
How much? The lamp costs £125.

Factory desk lamp from Idyll Home
If you're after an industrial style lamp, you're in luck as there are lots on offer at the moment. The latest example to come to our attention is this Factory desk lamp, available from Idyll Home.
The colour on this image is a bit misleading – it's actually white enamel used for the curved shade and base. Couple that up with an an adjustable chrome arm and you've got a lamp that's extra practical, as well as stylish.
This lamp costs £189.

eBay watch: 1960s Braun HL1 personal desk fan by Reinhold Weiss
Stylish 1960s modernism and no doubt practical too, especially at this time of year. The Braun HL1 personal desk fan that is.
The work of Reinhold Weiss in 1961, it still looks the part today – another example of Braun's forward-thinking design. The motor casing is made of off white plastic with a chrome rim separating the motor casing from the fan head. There is also a light grey plastic lever switch on the casing to select speed and a perspex casing to protect the blades.
The Desk Fan is in 'very good condition' and in 'full working order', as well as being priced quite reasonably right now. Bidding stands at £2.20.
Fonteyn midcentury-style desk by Steuart Padwick for Made.com
Regular readers might recall that we recently featured the Fonteyn dressing table, which was available at Made.com. Well, that same site has a variation on the theme in the form of this Fonteyn desk by Steuart Padwick.
Another exclusive to the online design site, it's one of the coolest desks we've seen for a long time. Taking the midcentury era for inspiration, the Fonteyn desk is made of oak and walnut, with those tapered legs mixing it with the curved of the actual desk, finished off with a couple of drawers and a clear lacquer to show off the grain of the wood. Perfect for letter writing or a laptop we think.
The full price is £1,100, but as ever, if you order within the limited period at Made.com, you get get it for much, much less. How much? £279 if you order in the next six days.
