1940s Girard Table reissued by Knoll

Knoll

A new table from Knoll for 2010 – but the Girard Table actually dates from the 1940s.

1941 to be precise (although it wasn't in production until 1945), the work of Alexander Girard, offering an asymmetric shape created by those tubular steel legs with a black powder coating and a top in a choice of walnut, natural oak or ebonised oak.

£622 is the starting price.

Blik Eames Circles wall decals

Blikeamescircles[1]

Charles and Ray Eames produced many iconic designs but they were never known for their wall stickers. Blik have made the most of this gap in the Eames' output and have produced, in association with the Eames office, these Circles wall decals

The design is based on the Eames' Circle fabric which can be seen on the cushion in the image and is made up of imperfectly shaped, illustration-like circles which are treated in various ways, such as being divided into quarters or filled with other concentric circles. The decals come in a range of four colours (snow, midnight, tomato or graphite) and two different sizes of circles at either 15cm or 38.1cm across. It's then up to you how you place them on your wall to create your own mid-century masterpiece.

They're priced at either £35 for a pack of 16 small circles or £45 for 10 large circles.

Keep Calm and Rock On card by Nancy & Betty

N&B keep calm

Just when you think the slogan has died a death, some new variation on the ubiquitous 'Keep Calm and Carry On' theme pops up. This time it's courtesy of Nancy & Betty, with their Keep Calm and Rock On card.

It replaces the well known crown of the original design with an image of an Eames rocker to illustrate the command. Nancy and Betty clearly must have a thing about Eames rockers if you compare it to their rocking new home card we previously featured. These sell in packs of five, each coming with their own envelope, and cost £6 for a set.

Make It! Mid-Century Modern on-line ‘how to’ book

MCM-eBook-11-0911

It's hard to keep track of the hundreds of mid-century classics we've featured on this site, alongside the contemporary pieces that use them for inspiration. However, all too often the style comes with a hefty price tag. If you like the look, but not the high costs involved, you may be interested in 'Make It', a how-to book on mid-century style that's available on-line.

The book has been put together by the people behind the Curlby web community and features twelve different projects ranging from how to make a Nelson-style clock, as shown above, to recreating your own Calder-influenced mobile or Girard-inspired Ottoman. The text also has information on all the designers highlighted.

With templates and patterns included, if you're craftily inclined, it sounds well worth the $9.99 for a downloadable colour pdf or $18 for a full colour printed version.

Mid-century modern furniture series by Eric Rewitzer

Rewitzer chairs

The classic looks of a mid-century chair seems to inspire a steady stream of artists. This modern furniture series by Eric Rewitzer is perfect for seating lovers who may have spent the majority of their money on an Egg chair, as the prints cost just $25 each.

There are ten lino prints in total, each measuring 6 x 8 inches. As well as including Finn Juhl's Chieftain chair and Nelson's Marshmallow sofa, as shown in the images, there's also the Egg chair and all the regular Eames, Saarinen and van der Rohe numbers you'd expect in a series like this. Each design has been produced in a limited edition of 100.

As well as the reasonable individual price, you can get all ten prints for $200: a mere fraction of the price you'd pay for the real thing.

Tiny Little Chairs: metal pendants featuring mid-century chair designs

Tinylittlechairs

How much do you like your classic chair designs? So much so that you'd be willing to wear them as jewellery? Well, that choice can be yours now with the Tiny Little Chairs pendants from Bruxe Design.

The necklaces are indeed both tiny, measuring 2 x 2cm each, and featuring chairs. Five chair icons in fact, all lovingly handmade on a miniature scale. There's the Pavilion pendant, which is basically Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona chair and then the Dining pendant, a mini version of Eero Saarinen's Tulip chair. The Eames' are well represented with the Scoop, Work and Bent pendant all being modelled on their designs.

Prices range from the seemingly affordable Bronze version of the Dining chair which retails for Canadian $140 (just over £80), to the out of my league Canadian $2500 for a gold Pavilion pendant. However, with that working out at just under £1500, that's still cheaper than the chair that inspired it.
