Daily menu 1950s designed paper napkins

Nilsson napkin

With the UK finally getting some good weather at the weekend, picnic season seems to be upon us once again. Add some retro flair to your picnic with these Daily Menu napkins

The paper napkins use a design by Marianne Nilsson from the 1950s and illustrate possible menus for various meals in the day. You may remember the homeware range we featured a little while back, featuring Nilsson's Herring design. These napkins are equally Scandinavian in its choice of flavours, with boiled egg and cheese offered as one of the breakfast options. You may not agree with her suggestions but the simple line drawings, combined with grey and bright lime and yellow colours, make the napkins look a pretty tasty option.

A pack of 20 costs £3.50.

Weber Smokey Joe barbecue at John Lewis

Weber

Summer is coming, the season of burning food in the great outdoors. If you don't fancy spending a month's wages on something huge and gas-powered, you could opt for something more basic, but plenty of retro style – like this Weber Smokey Joe barbecue.

It's exclusive to John Lewis (both instore and online), offering a compact unit that's good for picnics and flat dwellers (if you have a balcony), offering up a weatherproof porcelain enamelled bowl and lid, a lid lock for easy carrying, rust-proof air vent, triple chrome-plated grate and a measuring cup for your fuel.

All of which will cost you £59.95.

Royal Albert English Chintz hostess set

Royal Albert Chintz

The Royal Albert china company is celebrating its centenary and is dipping into its archives to celebrate, reproducing designs such as this English Chintz hostess set

The set has a typically 1940s look with its dotty and floral pattern and gold trim. It's also got a generously sized plate with plenty of space for a dessert to go with your cup of tea. One of several hostess sets available, you can also get sets featuring designs dating from 1910 and 1970 though they all share the same traditionally chintzy look.

This set costs £30.

New retro mugs from ISAK

Isak mugs

More fun and attractive retro designs courtesy of ISAK's new mugs. Sandra Isaksson's distinctive designs are as bright and appealing as ever, drawing on a range of influences.

The fish mug has a Scandinavian feel and reminds me of the New House Textile 50s herring design jar we featured a little while back, while the flower design has a similar look to all the reworked Fifties florals that have been seen recently. This design is also available on a pink background and, to complete the set, the range also includes a great pea-pod design.

Both mugs are made from bone china and, thankfully, are dishwasher safe. You can buy them for £7.25 each.

Birds Nest Plate by Donna Wilson

Donna Wilson bird

We've already seen how Donna Wilson's retro style can transfer onto homewares with her sprig tableware for SCP. There's now more ceramic designs available from her online store, including this Birds Nest plate.

The plate, which is handmade and printed in Stoke on Trent, uses a very 70s image and colour scheme. As with her other pieces – across furniture, textiles and ceramics – it's updated in Wilson's trademark style for the twenty-first century.

This fresh take on a classic motif costs £20.

Lotta tea towel

We've shown you some of Lotta Kuhlhorn's distinctive homewares before, including her great apple design. It's been a bit tricky in the past to find a UK stockist that carries a wide range of her products but thankfully Utility Designs has stepped into the gap.

As well as all the apples you could possibly want, there are a few new interesting products for your home, all using her trademark retro patterns. This Agneta Red Berries tea towel, for example, is one of a couple they have in stock and has a bold berry print and is sure to brighten up a kitchen.
