For sale: Charles Deaton’s Sculptured House – 1960s space age house from Woody Allen’s Sleeper in Denver, Colorado, USA

Sleeper1

Big thanks to Bob Luedeka for flagging up the sale of arguably the most famous space age house ever built – Charles Deaton's Sculptured House.

You probably know it better as the house in Woody Allen's futuristic 1973 movie Sleeper, but the property pre-dates that year, designed and built in 1963, just outside Denver, Colorado and covering 7,500 sq. ft. over three floors. It was last sold in 1999 by software millionaire John Huggins for $1.3 million, a native of the area who picked up the place in a state of serious neglect – and went about restoring it back to its former glory.

For sale: 1930s five-bedroom art deco house in Ilkley, West Yorkshire

Dacre1

For some years, I presumed all the better art deco-styled houses were in the south of Great Britain. But of late, we've found some cracking properties 'up north', including this five-bedroom art deco house in Ilkley, West Yorkshire.

It's an incredibly imposing house. Built back in 1937, it nestles into woodland, overlooking the West Yorkshire countryside and its own grounds, with that 1930s exterior looking faithful to the original design. That's not the case inside.

For sale: 1930s Robert Messenger & Son-designed art deco house in Birchington, Kent

Deco1

Art deco house by the seaside? We have one right here, this quirky Robert Messenger & Son-designed four-bedroom art deco house in Birchington, Kent.

It was built in 1938 for the retired sea captain G McCausland Hoey and is described as 'Streamline Moderne' in style, rather than typical art deco. Think of it as adding an ocean liner twist – perfect for a retired captain.

For sale: 1960s-designed Camden Pines house in Chislehurst, Kent

Camden1

Not the most instantly eye-catching house we've ever featured, but this 1960s-designed Camden Pines house in Chislehurst, Kent has the potential to be a real modernist gem.

A large 5-bedroom house in what's described as 'a quiet, secluded location', it was designed in 1968 by the architect Roy Lancaster with a number of features common from that particulalr era, including a large, light living room with floor to ceiling glazing and 'free-flowing' internal spaces. Downside? Well, externally it isn't much of a looker and the internal decor is very 'mumsy', so you'll have to use your imagination about what it could look like with a bit of effort.

For sale: The House That Jack Built 1930s art deco house in Louth, Lincolnshire

Lincoln1

Designed in 1931, The House That Jack Built was actually built by Thomas Dalgleish McLean, the winner of a competition to create 'a married man's ideal of a home' and shown off at the Ideal Home exhibition prior to its construction. Almost 80 years on and it's still a house that can turn heads. If it turns yours, this impressive property is on the market right now.

You'll find it in hillside in Louth, 26 miles from Lincoln, with 'panoramic' views of the town from the three-storey property. Externally, you could be stepping back in time, but like most deco houses in the UK, the interior has been made, for better or worse, into something more in keeping with the modern era.

For sale: Midcentury-inspired house in Gilston, Hertfordshire

Mid1

Interesting architecturally, but this midcentury-inspired house in Gilston, Hertfordshire will also make a very cool home if you happen to have the significant asking price available. Sadly, we don't.

Designed in 1960 by the architecture department of the renowned building firm Helmer & Dyer (for the occupation of Mr. Helmer), it's a detached four or five-bedroom house, which has been the subject of 'extensive and meticulous' renovation. Thankfully there's still plenty of interest left – large bespoke picture windows, hardwood detailing and a Bath-stone open fireplace for example.
