For sale: Art Deco Skye Haus in Graces Walk, Frinton-on-Sea, Essex

Frinton1

Yes, we're still being overrun with stylish 1930s properties, this time a mix of classic and modern with the Skye Haus in Graces Walk, Frinton-on-Sea, Essex.

A three-bedroom detached house on a private road on the Frinton Park Estate that's just a stone's throw from the sea, it was built in 1934-5 by architect J T Shelton under the guidance of Oliver Hill. It was one of 35 houses built on a development that was intended to showcase the best in British modern design, all under the guidance of the most innovative young architects of the day. Even now, it's a head turner, despite its modest size.

For sale: 1960s-designed Strarretts house in Chislehurst, Kent

Strar1

We recently featured one Norman Starrett house in Chislehurst in Kent, but now another has gone on sale – this 1960s-designed Strarretts house in Chislehurst, Kent.

Yes, the same town and the same architect, but this 5/6-bedroom house is significantly more expensive than the last one. Sat on a large, sloping plot, the house was designed back in 1962 as a ‘luxury’ house and has been ‘sympathetically maintained’ by its current owner, which is one way of saying that it’s architecturally sound on the outside, but accommodates the modern era inside with an updated layout. In particular, the garage has been turned into a studio space.

eBay watch: Lundby midcentury-style dolls houses and furniture

Lundby1

Big thanks to Sonia for inspiring today's eBay watch, although her collection of Lundby midcentury-style dolls houses and furniture could easily have fit into our Retro Rooms section.

Sonia has been buying 1960s and 1070s Lundby pieces off eBay of late, Swedish designs that replicate Scandinavian living of the time in minute detail – right down to the avocado bath suites, working light systems and illuminated period TVs and fish tanks.

For sale: 1960s-designed modernist house in Rendham, near Saxmundham, Suffolk

Rendham1

Something a little different in the Suffolk countryside – this 1960s-designed modernist house in Rendham, near Saxmundham, Suffolk.

It's one of a group of similar 'temple' houses designed by John Penn, a modernist-influenced architect who worked with Richard Neutra. Indeed, this is the first of the raised, symmetrical houses from nine in total and widely considered the best. It's also still faithful to the original design, still being in the hands of the family that commissioned it back in 1965. Although, according to the seller, that also means 'extensive refurbishment' is required throughout.

For sale: Modernist High & Over house in Amersham, Bucks

High1

Some years back, I first encountered the modernist High & Over house in Amersham, Bucks on the classic Metro-Land documentary and ever since, I've had a secret yearning to own the property. Well, it's now up for sale. Just a shame about the price tag.

It's an amazing house, the work of Amyas Connell and dating back to 1931, it was the first modernist property to be built in Great Britain. Sadly, it was split into two houses in the early 1960s (before it got listed status), but the current owners have re-united the two parts, as well as restoring High & Over to its former glory.
