Midcentury-style Radio Chair at John Lewis

Radiochair

Love this newly-arrived design at John Lewis – the Radio Chair.

Described as having '1960s retro style', it's very much a midcentury-inspired armchair. Especially with those splayed, tapered birch legs, rounded backrest and slim, slightly flared arms. Perfect for kicking back with a good book or for a night in front of the TV.

The Radio Chair is upholstered in that bright Breeze fabric and is available online right now, priced at £599. There's even a matching footrest, selling for an additional £299.

John Lewis Fifties-style Day at the Races cushion

Races cushion

Add a touch of 50s panache to a sofa with this Day at the Races cushion from John Lewis

The feather-filled cushion is decorated with an appliqued scene of spectators – dressed in their elegant period fashions – watching a horse race. Though firmly situated within the Fifties, this design was actually apparently inspired by an original piece in the John Lewis archive dating back to the 1700s.

This piece of timeless style costs £28.

John Lewis 60s-style Cadenza leather armchair and sofa

Cadenza2

Another retro-styled gem off the high street, this John Lewis Cadenza leather armchair and sofa.

A 60s-inspired design, with more than a bit of Florence Knoll about it, both the armchair and sofa are upholstered in high-quality, heavyweight black hide with what's described as a 'beautiful grain'. There's also that panelled seam detailing on the back cushions and inner/outer arms and polished metal 'sled legs'.

You can see a snap of the sofa over the page, with the price of that at £1,999, while the armchair goes for £1,200.

Ercol for John Lewis Chiltern dining chair

Ercol for John Lewis

We've featured a few of Ercol's products released in honour of their 90th anniversary this year. They've gone back to their archives again to produce pieces exclusively for John Lewis, such as this Chiltern dining chair

The chair is based on an original 1950s design and the oak material and splayed legs looks both typical of Ercol and of that period. Also available in white or black colours, you can also buy an accompanying dining table in the same range.

The chairs cost £175 each.

Midcentury-style Harvey light shade at John Lewis

Harvey

It looks like an expensive designer piece, but this Harvey light shade at John Lewis is very much in the 'affordable' bracket.

It obviously takes inspiration from midcentury Scandinavian design, not a million miles from the Louis Poulsen PH50 lamp with three concentric plates and a black painted finish for the metal shade.

Available online, the Harvey shade sells for £50.

Princess Alice wing chair at John Lewis

Alice

A statement seat inspired by a bygone era – the Princess Alice wing chair at John Lewis.

Yes, essentially it's a classic wing chair, perfect for taking a nap in, should you fancy a lazy Sunday. The design also features an exaggerated flared back, 'delicate' little scrolled armrests and pale turned oak legs for support.

That bright colour is via its upholstery in Designer's Guild Varese velvet fabric in aubergine and if you want a matching stool…well, there's one of those too, but you'll have to pay extra. You can pick up the Princess Alice wing chair on its own for £1,200.
