1950s-designed Honesty Rug from John Lewis

Honesty
This Honesty Rug from John Lewis continues the on-going trend for companies going back through their archives and re-issuing designs.

If the resulting products are as attractive as this rug, long may the trend continue! It's based on a 1953 design by Mary White, originally called 'Coppice' (I'm not sure why they changed the name). It fits in well with many of the designs being produced today, showing black outlines of plant forms against a charcoal and yellow colour scheme.

The rug is hand-tufted, costs £450 and should hopefully still be looking as attractive in another 57 years.

Sanderson 1950s-style Dandelions design now available as a rug

Sanderson dandelion rug

Sanderson's Dandelion design has proved to be amazingly popular. Their 1950s take on florals has itself been much imitated: in fact we mentioned it just last week in relation to the Next Alpine Meadow range.

Fans of the design will be pleased to hear that they are now producing it on a rug, a classy tufted wool number in the blue/green colour combination.

The price? Well, you know it's not going to be bargain basement. It's available for £595 but will hopefully keep on looking stylish for years to come.

Karlsson Spider wall clock

Karlsson spider clock

We've previously featured all kinds of attractive retro clocks that have come courtesy of Karlsson. This Spider Clock is no exception to the rule.

It features chrome tips that radiate out from the clock face, each covered in brightly coloured balls. In fact, it's quite similar to George Nelson's classic Vitra Ball clock.

However, the Karlsson version is available on a budget, costing just £35.

Mid-century style Celine desk at John Lewis

Celine desk
Got some correspondence that needs to be written in style? How about this Celine desk from John Lewis? It's very much in the mid-century mode with a simple top that allows plenty of space to spread your stuff out on and with a drawer and storage shelf underneath. The whole thing sits on solid oak legs.

It's an elegant piece of design that should stay looking good through the years. The desk sells for £349.

Make-do-and-Mend with John Lewis

Make-do-and-mendJLcombo

Surprisingly for a department store, John Lewis are encouraging their customers to be frugal this autumn. They're tapping into the Make-do-and-Mend trend this autumn and with a small booklet and practical classes at selected stores.

Their booklet is a collection of top thrift tips collected from their employees, rather than the reprint from the Imperial War Museum featured earlier this year. They've done a great job in packaging it up in retro style using lovely line drawings to illustrate the tips. It's on sale in their shops for £3, with all money going to John Lewis Foundation.

The classes take place at four selected John Lewis shops at end of this month and over October and they are encouraging you to bring along any clothes and accessories in need of updating. The classes are free to attend, though apparently you will be charged for materials used.
