Arne Jacobsen-style Gordon table lamp from Graham and Green

Graham and Green's website says this Gordon table lamp is inspired by 1940s design, and there's no denying the retro appeal of the design. However, with the distinctive shape of that shade, it reminds me of a much later design – Arne Jacobsen's AJ lamps, which dates to 1960.

The main difference is the stand: the Gordon lamp has been mounted onto a metallic stand and base, which brings more of an industrial look and prevents the lamp from being purely an imitation design.  

While a AJ lamp would cost you around £500, this lamp costs £95.

Watt ceiling lamp at John Lewis

You really can't get any more classic than the Watt ceiling lamp at John Lewis.

As the name suggests and the images show, this is a ceiling lamp based on the light bulb.  Indeed, it's a bulb within a bulb, that larger outer bulb made of glass and with a brushed chrome finish, holding a 25w bulb for the light.

Sold with a 130cm drop of cable, it's yours for £45.

1960s Santa and Cole Pie de Salon floor lamp by Jaume Sans

Cool, classy and indeed classic, that's the Santa and Cole Pie de Salon floor lamp by Jaume Sans.

From the early part of the decade as you might have guessed, this 1963 design offers up an adjustable leather-covered brass stem, which opens out into a base with three points of support. On top of all that is the shade, which is available in three different shapes and in either stitched beige cardboard, natural ribbon or white linen.

eBay watch: 1970s chrome and black desk lamp

Love this design, although the 1970s chrome and black desk lamp doesn't come with a maker's name sadly.

According to the seller, the lamp was probably made in Italy, that mix of black and chrome, with a modernist feel and directional light for reading or working.

That same seller says the lamp is in 'very, very good above-average condition' with 'only marginal signs of age'. Good price right now too, just £1.

Ikea 365+ Verner Panton-inspired Brasa table, floor and ceiling lamps

What are you thinking? Verner Panton's Panthella lamp? Or maybe the designer's Flowerpot lighting? The Ikea 365+ Brasa table, floor and ceiling lamps wouldn't look out of place sat next to either design.

But this is no Panton design, it's the work of A Nilsson, H Preutz and T Eliasson for Ikea and available in three colour options (red, black and white). The floor lamp is made of steel, with a pigmented powder coating, with a dimmer function and a plastic inner casing to prevent glare.

The pendant light is also made of steel, with a pigmented epoxy powder coating, while the table lamp has the same construction, again with that dimmer switch found on the floor version. You can see the table lamp over the page, with more details on the Ikea site. Prices are £90.89 for the floor light, with the ceiling light at £45.95 and table lamp selling for £60.26.

Rochelle Task lamp from John Lewis

Another great retro styled light available on the high street – this time it's John Lewis' turn with their Rochelle Task lamp.

The task lamp title gives a clue to its style – it goes for an industrial feel with a painted metal base and shade. The cord fabric has been wrapped to complete the retro look. It's also available in a range of bright colours: choose from orange, green, blue or the red version pictured. 

The lamp costs £35.
