Space age style Spring lamp at House of Fraser

Spring lamp

Another contemporary design that looks like it came out of another decade, the Spring lamp available at House of Fraser

Looking very much as if it came from the same space age stable as designs by people like Vico Magistretti or Giancarlo Mattioli, this lamp is made from red gloss effect glass. Combine that with the shape and you've got a pretty interesting looking lamp that belies its high street origins.

Reasonably priced too, at £50.

Cyber wall lamp by Litecraft

Litecraft lamp

With its distinctive looks, this Cyber wall lamp could easily fit into a 1970s interior. However, it's a contemporary design, courtesy of Litecraft, and something of a bargain too.

The lamp is made from a glass shade with an orange surround. Made from plastic, the colour, material and shape of the surround all help to create the retro look. The wall fitting is chrome. On looks alone, it's an interesting piece, but the lamp also promises to offer soft and ambient lighting.

Sounds worth trying out for the price of only £12.90.

Jonathan Adler new lighting

Lamp_ravello1

New products from Jonathan Adler are always going to be worth a look for retro enthusiasts and his new lighting designs are no exception.

The range uses a variety of materials, such as lucite or ceramics, to create unusual designs. Pictured is the distinctive looking Ravello, which tops off a base made from iron, teak and a ceramic tile with an oatmeal linen shade. It's a look that would fit well into a glamorous 60s interior.

There's a significant price tag attached to the look too. This lamp costs $695, with prices for the new lights starting at $295.

BHS retro glass light fittings

Bhs lights

Although not the most obvious hunting ground for retro enthusiasts, bargains from BHS do pop up on this site from time to time, mostly from their lighting range. It's from that department we've founded these glass light fitting, an inexpensive and easy way to add a retro touch to a room.

On the left is their optic dome, made from rippled glass, perfect for a 70s look. It's available in smoked glass or in lime or teal. The smooth glass dome on the right is available in bright colours only: pick from lime, teal or purple.

Both styles of light fittings cost the cheap and cheerful price of £20 each.

Tony Duquette lighting range at Remains

Tony_duquette_sconce

If you're not familiar with the work of Tony Duquette, he was a Hollywood artist and designer who worked from the 1940s up until the 1990s. Remains Lighting are now producing a range based on his original designs.

The designs are big on the Hollywood glitz and glamour so perhaps aren't suitable for those with a more minimalistic taste. The Golden Sunburst scone pictured takes inspiration from a motif in a curtain that he designed for the L.A. Music Center in 1964 and is typically ornate.

Made from hand-polished metal, the prices seem to be aimed at Hollywood stars as, for this design, they range from $2275 for a gloss white finish to $2795 for an antique brass model. Want to see it in the flesh? Although the company is based in New York, you can find details of their London showroom on their website.

George Nelson’s Bubble Lamps in colour

Bubble lamps colour

George Nelson purists may want to look away now. His Bubble lamp collection, which was originally designed in 1947, is well known in its creamy-white colour palette. However, as an alternative, Room & Board in the States are now stocking coloured versions.

The shades are soft and offer a subtle new look on a classic. The colours are available on just three designs: the saucer pendant is $435, the cigar pendant is $359 and the propeller is $365 – exactly the same price as the white versions.
