Yoko retro-styled sofa bed at Made.com

Made

I like the idea of Made.com – the company cuts out the middle man by getting a group of people together who want a certain design, get it made to order, then ship the item out to you for a cheaper price. It takes longer than nipping down to the shop and getting one, but if time is on your side, it's worth considering. Especially with designs like this Yoko sofa bed.

It's a sofa bed with a 1960s twist. Stylish and indeed functional, it has a pine frame and leather upholstery, with the option to use as a sofa or flick out for a guest bed. Two colours currently available, cream or black.

If you want either, be quick – the company is only taking orders for just over two days. If you do sign up, you'll get it for the discount price, which is £149.

Boundary sideboard designed by Steuart Padwick at Made.com

Boundary sideboard

The advantages of made.com's manufacturing policy are made clear by Steuart Padwick's Boundary sideboard. With a great take on mid-century style, it's interesting to compare it to Padwick's Coast sideboard, which looks very similar but retails for about five times the price.

Of course there is disadvantages too. Partly that you have limited choices in the finish: it's only available with either the walnut veneered doors pictured, or with grey doors. The main disadvantage, however, is the wait for it to be manufactured – it will take approximately 10 to 14 weeks from your order to its delivery.

However, the price is pretty persuasive – it costs either £375 with the grey doors, or £399 with the walnut doors.

Dowel sofa by Sean Dix

Dowel sofa

This Dowel Sofa designed by Sean Dix is another retro-inspired design courtesy of Made.com.

It takes its inspiration from 1960s Scandinavian designs and is an elegant number. There's a nice attention to detail, such as in the curved arms or in the exposed slats of the ash wood and stainless steel frame at the back of the sofa.

As with all designs by Made.com, the production method and materials are aimed at keeping the costs down. In this case, the sofa costs £499.

Dreamline cruise canvas by Marten Rijnen

Cruise poster

If all the chaos caused by an erupting Icelandic volcano makes you long for a more glamorous age of travel, you may be interested in this Dreamline cruise canvas by Marten Rijnen

It's a completely contemporary design but obviously harks back to travel posters of the 1920s and 30s. The striking design is printed onto canvas measuring 60cm wide by 80cm high. For those less bothered about recent flight disruption, there's also a twin design featuring a plane.

It's sold by Made.com: we featured their Spoon coffee table last week. Like with the table, to get their low prices you have to wait for the product to be made after ordering – in this case a wait of 10 to 15 weeks.

The canvas costs £39.

Spoon coffee table at Made.com

Spoon_coffee_table_main

Here's an interesting new product from an interesting new company. This Spoon coffee table comes from the range of Made.com. Made is a new website, set up with the aim of 'revolutionising the furniture retail market'. How they propose to do this is by cutting out the middleman: once you order your table, you have to wait for it to be manufactured and shipped, hopefully resulting in a cheaper price.

Of course we wouldn't be including this table on this site if it wasn't for its retro looks and indeed this coffee table (along with the rest of the 'Spoon' range) has that with its curvy lines and interesting geometric table top. The design comes courtesy of Sean Dix, one of six designers producing work for the site.

Is the price enough to convince you that this is indeed the way to revolutionise the furniture market? It's £137.
