eBay watch: 1960s Dansette Tempo portable record player

Dansette

Scan through eBay and you'll find a good number of Dansette record players for sale, some cheap, some not-so-cheap, some working, some nothing more than a pile of parts. This Dansette Tempo portable record player is probably near the top of the pile, with a few bids already placed for it.

It's a classic Dansette in both shape and colour, oozing authenticity and after being on the receiving end of a full service, working as well today as it did back in 1962. The 4 speed Garrard Autoslim autochanger will play speeds of 16, 33, 45 and 78 rpm manually or can load a selection of up to six records of either 7, 10 or 12 inch to be played automatically.

USB Retro Mobile MP3 Player – shaped like an 80s brick mobile phone

Brick

Is it a mobile phone from the 1980s? Or is it an MP3 player? Well, as the name suggests, the USB Retro Mobile MP3 Player from Brando is the latter, but shaped like the former.

Yes, shaped like a 'brick' phone, it actually plays your MP3/WMA files, holds a microSD card for storage and hooks up to your PC via USB. There's even an FM radio and rechargeable battery to finish things off.

What do all those buttons do? No idea, but you can have fun finding out. The price is $23 from Brando directly, which is a paltry £14.66.

Book reviews: King of Carnaby Street by Jeremy Reed and The Big Beat Scene by Royston Ellis

Books

If you are lookng for something interesting and with a retro twist to get your teeth into, we have two candidates newly-reviewed on our Modculture site – King of Carnaby Street by Jeremy Reed and The Big Beat Scene by Royston Ellis.

The first of those is a biography on that king of Carnaby Street, John Stephen. It's the story of his arrival in London, how we learned the basics of clothes making and retailing and of course, how he went on to dominate both Carnaby Street and men's fashion in the 1960s and early 1970s.

The Big Beat Scene by Royston Ellis is a reissue from 1961, described as 'an outspoken expose of the teenage world of rock 'n' roll' by 'the king of the beatniks', 19-year-old Ellis. You can read reviews of both books in the Modculture books section right now.

Brennan and Burch tape wall stickers

Tpstickers

Long surpassed as a music format, the cassette tape still remains a favourite with designers. Another new product using its instantly recognisable form is this set of tape wall stickers from Brennan and Burch.

The work of illustrator Lisa Brennan, there are six different printed vinyl designs in a pack, which measures 50cm square. With a fun, cartoonish element and though it's the wrong era of musical technology, the bright colours give them a Pop feel.

Apparently a limited edition (though I'm not sure exactly how limited), a pack costs £30.

Re_Vinyl Wall clocks

Revinyl

We've featured hundreds of things made from vinyl on this site over the years, from wallets to coasters to bookends, so it's hard to believe there's much out there in the world of reclaimed vinyl to discover. That's until you take a look at the Re_Vinyl wall clocks

Pavel Sidorenko creates weird and wonderful clocks, all made from old records, in the shape of things like teapots, umbrellas, birds, cassette tapes and even odes to his native Estonia. Once you've taken your pick from that wide selection you get a further choice, between minimal or vintage style clock hands.

Each clock costs 30 Euros, or 25 Euros if you're lucky enough to be buying within Estonia.
