Bridge table
The Matthew Hilton-designed Bridge table is another great design from the Heal's Scandinavian season.

Just a look at the table reveals its mid-century inspired influences, with its elegant tapering legs, and oak or walnut veneer finish. There's a practical twist to this design too: it's able to extend in size. Available in two sizes, the smaller table extends from 110cm up to 160cm, while the larger table is 260cm when extended.  

While the table is able to grow or shrink in size, there's no escaping the price you'll be paying for this classic design: the smaller table costs £1095, while the larger version costs £1595.

Orbit mid-century style furniture range from Debenhams

Another mid-century style furniture range available on the high street. Doing the honours this time is the Orbit range from Debenhams. 

This oak range of furniture covers a wide range of items, from dining chairs to bookcases, and tables to mirror. Each item has been given the lines, and the legs you might associate with a mid-century look. Practical too, with the sideboard and shelves offering plenty of storage options. 

Prices start at £289 for the mirror and go up to £919 for the sideboard pictured.

Midcentury-style dining table and chairs at Dooley’s Furniture

Functional, as well as offering a nod to the 1950s. that's this midcentury-style dining table and chairs at Dooley's Furniture.

Th is modern design is fairly timeless, although it is obviously inspired by midcentury Scandinavian pieces, offering up that retro twist without throwing it in your face. All made of oak, you get the table with that slanted legs and lacquered finish, plus the chairs, with the same finish, but with curved backs and slightly angled seats.

eBay watch: Large 1950s midcentury-style coffee table

Mid_table

Nice design and right now, a nice price for this large 1950s midcentury-style coffee table.

According to the seller, it's 'probably' made of blond oak, with a 'black glas' top and those four angled legs. The whole thing about 100cm wide and 53cm tall.

Condition is said to be 'excellent original', with only light wear, mostly to the legs. The top has 'very light wear' only. If you fancy it in our living room, the current price is £9.

Splay oak chair from Heal’s

Splay chair
The Splay oak chair is another 1950s-style design, courtesy of Heal's new Scandinavian design for living range. 

This isn't a design they've plucked from their archive but one that's simply been inspired by the period. Made from oak, with a stylish curved back and topped off with a green wool seat, the chair has the good looks to see it through many more decades to come.  

The chair costs £250.

Desk One from Another Country

Another country desk

Another Country's Desk One gives a contemporary design update to an old-fashioned style school desk.

While the essential components of a desk are there – a drawer, and an indentation in its top to hold your pens and pencils – this is probably far higher quality of anything you ever sat at while in school. It's made in the UK, produced in Dorset to be specific, from solid oak/ash. It's been adapted for twenty-first century demands too, with an option of a cable tidy to accommodate computers and the like. Pick from the natural version pictured, or a black finish.
