100 years of Michelin House

Michelin poster

If you are London based, you may want to check out some of the events designed to celebrated 100 years of Michelin House

This distinctive building, on the corner of Fulham Road, was commissioned by the Michelin company as their first British HQ. They moved out in 1985 when it was bought by Terence Conran and Paul Hamlyn. The building now hosts the Conran Shop as well as the Bibendum oyster bar and remains as architecturally interesting as ever, decorated with stained glass, ornate tiles and combining a curious mixture of Art Nouveau and Art Deco influences.

Currently the front of the shop and a small display is devoted to the building's history, including some archive photographs and original advertising posters. As part of the celebrations, six of these iconic pieces of Michelin advertising, selected from their historic archive, have been re-issued by the Conran Shop on canvas – including the distinctive design above.

Unfortunately the prints are currently available in store only but prices start at £99 for a 72 x 52cm print.

A Two Pipe Problem Letterpress Studio

  2pipe_v2

A Two Pipe Problem is a Walthamstow-based letterpress studio run by graphic designer Stephen Kenny. Using his collection of old wooden blocks and metal type he designs and prints striking posters featuring quotes inspired by music, film and literature. The typography creates a strong visual impact with classic style and the antique nature of the materials used means that no two posters are the same.

Stephen will also undertake commissions to produce one-off posters to commemorate weddings and births and if you really have the letterpress bug, you can even attend a workshop at his studio and learn a little bit about the history of the press and then create your own poster to take home.

The poster featured above costs £32 and you can find out more about Stephen and his work here

eBay watch: 1960s Morecambe and Wise That Riviera Touch movie poster

Riv

Once upon a time, movie posters were cheap and plentiful on eBay, with cult classics being available for £10 or less just about every day. But a few years on and most auctions are 'buy it now' and well into three figures. So this 1960s Morecambe and Wise That Riviera Touch movie poster is something of a rarity.

it's an original UK quad poster (30 x 40 inches), dating from 1966 and featuring that great cartoon graphic of (arguably) Britain's finest comedy double act. According to the seller, it's in 'mint' condition, with no marks or rips and just as importantly, no fading.

Right now, bidding is at £40.

We Make Posters poster by Telegramme Studio

Telegramme poster
An interesting way to promote your business, this poster by graphic designers and illustrators Telegramme Studio is simply called We Make Posters

The four colour screen-print uses some of the artwork and typography you'd associate with retro advertising. The piece originally appeared on the back of Creative Review magazine and is described by Telegramme Studio themselves as a shameless advert for their own work. That seems pretty successful then, as the print is desirable in its own right.

The print is limited to 80 copies and costs £35.

Keep Calm and Scoot On Poster

Il_570xN_192052140
For a while I was tired with the Keep Calm moto, but this Keep Calm and Scoot On poster has reignited my enthusiasm.

It is part of a series of designs aimed at encouraging people to keep doing the things they love, which the designer had noticed were being neglected during these tough times. Other words of encouragement include to “a eat a cupcake”, “sew on” “snap on” (with a vintage camera) and something we need no persuasion to do ,“drink tea”.

A 13 by 19 inches poster costs around £10 and is available in an array of colours from the Keep Calm Shop on Etsy.
